On December 26, 1948, test pilot Ivan Evgrafovich Federov (Ива́н Евгра́фович Фёдоров) became the first pilot in the Soviet Union to exceed Mach 1 when he flew the Lavochkin La-176 in a dive from 9,050 meters (29,692 feet) to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet)23.Initially, it was believed that the La-176's airspeed indicator had malfunctioned. However, during subsequent testing conducted in the first week of January 1949, Federov repeated the dive and reached Mach 1.02 six times, confirming the aircraft's supersonic capability. Tragically, the La-176 was later destroyed when its canopy failed during supersonic flight, resulting in the death of test pilot I.V. Spanish aerospace propulsion leader ITP Aero has cemented its role in national defence with a pivotal contract to deliver 59 EJ200 engines to the Spanish Air Force (Ejército del Aire y del Espacio). The agreement, part of the Halcón project, was signed between EUROJET Turbo GmbH (EUROJET) and the NATO Eurofighter & Tornado Management Agency (NETMA), aiming to bolster the Eurofighter Typhoon fleet’s capabilities. ITP Aero will manage the final assembly of the engines at its Ajavir facility in Madrid, with initial deliveries set for 2029. This ensures that the EJ200 assembly lines will remain active until at least 2034, offering continuity and growth for ITP Aero’s operations in Spain. Carlos Alzola Elizondo, Managing Director of ITP Aero, expressed the significance of the deal, stating: “This contract underlines the ongoing success of the EJ200 engine and our pivotal role in this world-class programme. The collaboration between ITP Aero and the other EUROJET partners continues to deliver unparalleled performance, reinforcing both Spain’s and Europe’s sovereignty in the defence sector. 31 October 1959: A Historic Flight of the MiG-21. On this day in 1959, Soviet test pilot Georgy Konstantinovich Mosolov flew a prototype MiG-21, designated E-66, at the Joukovski-Petrovskoe airfield. This historic flight set a Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) world speed record of 2,388 kilometers per hour (1,483.8 miles per hour) over a 15-25 kilometer straight course. The E-66, also known as the E-6/3 at the Mikoyan Design Bureau, was first flown in December 1958. Powered by a Tumansky 11F-300 afterburning turbojet engine, this prototype underwent several modifications and re-designations throughout its testing phase. Mosolov's record-breaking flight further solidified the MiG-21's reputation as a high-performance aircraft.
