🌾 On 18 June 2024, the Scottish Parliament passed the Agriculture and Rural Communities (Scotland) Bill, and is about to create and shape a financial framework of support for Scotland’s farmers and crofters. 👩🌾 But what is the legal position of small-scale agriculture in this framework, and what type of legal mechanisms are in place to redistribute subsidy support to these small farms in a more meaningful way? ✍ Led by Mirta Alessandrini, and co-authored by Edwin Alblas (both from the Law Group at the Wageningen University & Research), we recently published ‘Smallholder farms in the sustainable food transition: A critical examination of the new Common Agricultural Policy’ in RECIEL. Development cooperation practitioners, why don't you include pricing and costing scenarios for those you expect to pick up what you suggest to them? In my 20+ years in this area, I have only once seen this kind of critical information comprehensively communicated by a project. Actually I have seldom seen any costing figures in outreach materials at all. I'm not claiming, it's not done. It's just, I don't see it. You might find some information somewhere, what a project implementation had cost as information for the taxpayers in donor countries.
