I love the direction that Chevy is heading with the latest Corvette. Though it is sad to see them do away with the Camaro, it is exhilarating to see them double down on Corvette performance. First and foremost, switching to the mid-engine setup with the 5.5L flat plane crank V8 was a performance-oriented switch over from the previous generation's design and powerplant. We normally associate those things with European supercars but it's because it's easy to see just how effective they are. Now, to build on top of those key design changes, Chevy is switching from the historically American-fashion supercharged powerplant to the more European influenced twin-turbo set up in the 5.5L LT6.
These changes are beautiful. They speak to the true nature of the Corvette: a masterpiece of racing-oriented engineering. I am a big Mercedes fan, so seeing the tuning and performance capabilities of a twin-turbo setup in their true AMG cars excites me when considering what the new ZR1 can accomplish, especially in the aftermarket setting. Furthermore, companies like Hennessey have already accomplished incredible things with twin-turbo setups. Which makes me curious, is this European influence on the American supercar going to bring the Corvette to an even higher status of performance? And on the other hand, will we see any major downsides with these changes?
