Four years ago today we opened, "Alien vs. Citizen." Inspired by conversations about the visas awarded to "aliens of extraordinary ability" and other merit-based immigration policies, "Alien vs. Citizen" considered how an individual's value is understood in relationship to the community. The exhibition asks us to think about the way a person's value is determined in the United States, through mechanisms including citizenship, work, and personal relationships. The artworks are organized around these three ways of estimating worth, inviting us to consider the cultural biases embedded in each. The exhibition was organized by former Interim Senior Curator January Parkos Arnall. A full list of artists included in this exhibition can be found on our website.

It’s January 1 and today was a good day in 1892. Prior to 1890, immigration into the U.S. was regulated by individual states and Manhattan’s Castle Garden was the immigration station for the State of New York. But the 1800’s saw Europe increasingly challenged by political instability, economic distress, and religious persecution, leading to the largest mass human migration in history. Castle Garden was not equipped to handle this, so the federal government chose to build a new immigration station on Ellis Island. On January 1, 1892. Irish teenager Annie Moore and her two younger brothers made history as the very first immigrants to be processed at Ellis Island. Over the next 62 years, they would be joined by more than 12 million immigrants who passed through the doors of the iconic Great Hall. But Ellis Island was more than just a gateway; it became a symbol of hope and opportunity for those seeking a new life, as well as a melting pot where diverse cultures mingled. While Ellis Island ceased its operation in 1954 as immigration duties shifted to U.S. embassies, its impact endures. The descendants of those who passed through its gates continue to shape the nation's cultural, political, and economic landscape. Today, the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration preserves and narrates this compelling history, showcasing the personal stories of those who embarked on their American journey. The international strategy, “Inspiring Connections”, will promote all levels of our cultural sector to the wider world, but that will not be without its challenges. Scotland's world class cultural output is being harmed by #Brexit. The conversation in Europe is about youth, mobility and emerging artists. But artists in Scotland face increased bureaucracy and financial barriers making it harder to tour and to compete. If Denmark or France wants to book a Celtic artist, it is easy to bypass Scotland and look to Ireland. As a small independent nation in Europe with a £9.6 billion surplus, it is able to use its 92 diplomatic and consular offices to support its cultural strategy. We can look on in awe and envy, but we can aspire to that in an independent Scotland.

Today marks an important milestone in Italian Citizenship history! On July 16, 1920, the Treaty of Saint Germain came into effect, marking the assignment of Austro-Hungarian Empire territories post-WWI. This date is crucial under Italian Citizenship Law 379/2000, particularly for those born in territories like Trentino Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, or Veneto, or their descendants. Here's why it matters: If your Italian ancestor emigrated before July 16, 1920, they did so as an Austro-Hungarian citizen, not Italian. This impacts eligibility for passing down Italian citizenship to descendants. If you're tracing your Italian roots from these regions, besides meeting current citizenship criteria, you'll need to prove your ancestor emigrated from Italy after July 16, 1920.
