As internship application season rolls around once more, I find myself reflecting on the invaluable experiences I've had thus far. To say I’ve had an enriching journey as a marketing student after being placed at AMP Agency in the Summer of '22 and Evoke Mind+Matter the Summer of '23 by BLAC Internship Program would be an understatement. Here’s what I've gained so far: 1. Knowledge - As interns our clean slate leaves us the opportunity to soak up knowledge without the pressure of having all the answers. Learn to actively listen and ask questions. Trust me, it’ll help build your confidence when navigating professional settings. My value in the power of teamwork and humility in achieving success grew with experience. I like learning from others rather than striving to be the best individual performer. Collaboration is key; it takes a trusting team to produce the best work. 2. Practice - There’ll be times you have no idea what you’re doing, but realize you were trusted enough to try. I’ve seen first-hand how SEO can affect the visibility of content. Doing brand competition research improved my understanding of market positioning, while adapting content for different platforms showed me the nuances of audience engagement. Introduction to tools like Canva Pro and the Adobe Creative Cloud suite empowered me to create visually appealing brand assets and helped sharpen my copywriting skills. Each task helped me grow. Practice. 3. Connections - Throughout my internship journey, a network of mentors and peers supported my growth. Big THANK YOU to Alysha Ali and Emily Jahn for your willingness to trust little ole me with the responsibilities and for your support through challenges. Final THANK YOU to Nicolet Gatewood for your efforts to remind Black advertisers of our value (even beyond the program). From encouraging the freedom to explore different aspects of marketing to being seen as a valuable team member who deserves to take up space, my professional experiences have set high expectations for my future roles, and I'm grateful for every bit of it. #InternshipExperience #MarketingJourney #ProfessionalGrowth #LearningAndDevelopment #Advertising

Maximizing Your Summer Internship: Insights from Lucia Johnson Meet Lucia Johnson, the Kennedy Center’s summer 2024 Social Media intern. Lucia has had the incredible opportunity to learn hands-on about managing the social media presence of one of the nation’s leading performing arts centers. She’s assisted in curating paid advertising campaigns and creating organic content and developed experience with ticket sales software, link-building, live event coverage, copywriting, and more. Here are Lucia’s key insights for making the most of your summer internship: Try New Things with Confidence: Don’t be afraid to throw yourself into new experiences. Lucia’s journey has included navigating crowded venues to capture live events and chaperoning students at the U.S. Capitol. Taking risks is essential for growth. Ask Questions: In a field like social media, where many factors influence content, it’s crucial to ask for clarification when needed. Supervisors prefer questions over avoidable mistakes. Lead with Open Ears and a Smile: Show genuine interest in what others do. Being curious and receptive helps build valuable connections, especially in the cultural sectors. Lucia’s approach emphasizes the importance of confidence, curiosity, and proactive learning. Awesome job, Lucia!

I am one month into my internship with 22Squared as a strategy intern and I am learning so much everyday! 🥳Here are 5 things I have taken away from my first month thanks to the incredible team here: #teambuilding 🧑🧑🧒🧒how important the relationship is between creative strategy and media and how they integrate to create affective campaigns #thoughtleadership 💭as strategists research is apart of our day to day tasks but keeping up with macro and micro trends allows us to keep clients and other departments informed as well #buildingstrategies 📚showing how comms and brand strategy provide an solid foundation and framework for next steps and all that goes into the idea behind the idea #researchskills 👩🏻💻knowing how, where and what to pull from different platforms and synthesizing it into digestible information #networking 🤝🏻everyone knows how important getting to know others is but getting the chance to talk to people across different departments has opened my eyes to how they integrate with strategy and has been helpful to see how it takes a village. If you have taken the time to chat with me it is greatly appreciated! Along with many other skills! I cannot wait to see what July brings! #strategyintern #communicationstrategy

It was 4 am… …and the next thing I knew, I was talking live on the radio. This experience taught me so much as a 19-year-old (13 years ago! 🫢). My first internship was at a radio station in Raleigh, NC. As a communication major at #NCState, this internship was a big deal. I was SO excited and saw it as the opportunity of a lifetime. I was at the station before 4 am each morning to gather information for my boss, who was an on-air host. I even had the opportunity to host my own segment called “Morgan Moments,” where I talked about weird and interesting news. Here are a few things that I learned as an intern: 💡 Perseverance - My boss wasn’t advertising the internship. I actually reached out to her a semester before to see if she needed an intern, but it was a little too late. I followed up months later and secured the internship ✅ 💡 Leave Your Comfort Zone - I love talking to people but am more of an introvert. Talking on the radio made me nervous, but it was a cool experience that I really enjoyed. If I had stayed in my comfort zone, I would have never had the opportunity. 💡 Harness the Opportunity - I worked with my boss to create my own on-air segment. Talking on the radio was so cool at the time (and still is!) and was a great way for me to escape my comfort zone. I took advantage of the opportunity I had and made the most of it. What was your first internship or job experience like and what did it teach you? Let me know in the comments! ------------------------------------- My name is Morgan and I'm the founder of Oak Arbor Marketing, a content marketing company for SMBs and startups. It's time for our #internshiphighlight of the week! This week, we are introducing Alex Gillette. Alex's hard work and creativity have been invaluable this fall. What skills have you gained from your current internship at TREND? I would say collaborating with others in a professional environment might be one of the most important things I have learned. Also, using analytic tools such as Spotify for Artists and Instagram/TikTok insights to test strategies for different marketing campaigns has been a particularly illuminating experience for me. What is your favorite aspect of your internship? What I enjoy most about my internship at TREND is the guided freedom it offers. I’ve had the chance to experiment with different approaches to brand management and digital marketing. More importantly, the supportive work environment stands out to me. Everyone at TREND has been incredibly friendly and patient as I learn industry best practices. What inspired you to pursue a career in the music industry? Music has always been a core part of my life, so combining my passion for it with digital marketing feels like the perfect fit. I love connecting with different artists and exploring their stylistic preferences, which resonates with my background as a musician. #internship #musicindustry #brandmanagement #publicrelations
