At Menno's Apiaries, we believe in cultivating a garden that not only thrives but also supports our buzzing friends. 🐝🐝🐝
Based on the guide below, several flowers and herbs are particularly effective at attracting bees.
🐝 Lavender, with its fragrant purple blooms, and the sunny Black Eyed Susan are top choices for any bee-friendly garden.
🐝 Vibrant flowers like Echinacea, Blue Borage, and Poppies are also favorites, offering both nectar and visual appeal.
🐝 Herbs such as Rosemary and the delicate blossoms of Honeysuckle provide excellent foraging opportunities.
🐝 Additionally, plants like Agapanthus, Buddleia, and Goldenrod, with their clusters of flowers, create a haven for bees. Even more, Clover, Verbena, and Cornflower are reliable staples, ensuring that your garden remains a buzzing hub of activity.
Embrace these plants to foster a thriving ecosystem for bees at Menno's Apiaries!

A lot of our present data in this area is due to persistent work of Dr. Frank Brown, BioProf -NW Uni. After a career in endocrinology, he got interested in the field of bio-cycles in the 1950's.
His search for an organism & biocycle pattern to be studied in conjunct w/magnetic fields, he turned to an unlikely animal, the mud snail Nassarius. He found when these animals were placed under uniform illumination in an enclosure w/an exit facing mag south, they'd tum westward in early AM, eastward @ noon, and then back WEST in the early eve as they exited. Also, at new & full moons the snails veered more to the west, & at the moon's quarters turned more east.
When fully analyzed, the data meant the snails had both a lunar day & solar day "clock".
Mag field measures @ the test site averaged 0.17 gauss. Placing a bar magnet of 1.5 gauss beneath the exit oriented in a north-south direction (to augment the natural field) resulted in upping turn average angle but did not alter the basic rhythmicity. Turning the entire apparatus so that the exit pointed in a different direction resulted in snails' different degrees turns. The same result could be obtained by leaving the apparatus stationary & rotating the magnet beneath the exit.

IS THE #DETRIVORE#DETRIMENTAL?
Due to the excess of #rain the past weeks, Dutch gardeners complained about a plague of #slugs eating all their sprouting #vegetables. They did so in my garden too, but I didn't really bother as a lazy, laissez-faire gardner I adapt my menu to what's not eaten by the slugs.
Gardeners try all sorts of strategies, distracting slugs from eating saplings with kitchen waste, digging in glasses of diluted beer and to my surprise and disgust cutting the slugs in halves.
The problem ofcourse isn't the slugs, the problem is in the vegetable garden design where the veges are planted in an easily accessible aisle, like #UPF in a #supermarket.
Slugs are amongst the detrivores, a rather insulting name, the eaters of detritus, #waste, yet a fundamentally crucial role in #nature.
Slugs in reality are nature's #recyclers, a task we don't value. Not as part of nature, nor as part of our societal behaviour.
