As we continue our recognition of Disability Pride Month and its symbolic flag, we highlight the flag’s blue color, which represents people who experience emotional and psychiatric disabilities. To better understand the meaning of the blue flag color and to get an authentic perspective, we asked Diana Reader, Human Resources Coordinator in our Philadelphia, PA office to share her related experience and tell us why Disability Pride Month is important to her. Have we made progress in the last 35 years…absolutely! Individuals with Down Syndrome are living on their own, have meaningful employment and are contributing members of their communities. However, we have so much more to do! Educating communities about the value and contributions of people with Down Syndrome needs to be at the top of our list. I talk with people every day that still hold antiquated notions of people with Down Syndrome. And this must change. I encourage you to engage directly with individuals with Down Syndrome and other disabilities so you can experience their unique gifts and talents, volunteer with Special Olympics, church ministries and other organizations that include and support people with disabilities and help create a more inclusive and respectful environment for people with disabilities to contribute and thrive. Autistic Bipolar ADHDer | Keynote Speaker, Creator and Advocate on Neurodiversity | Author of We’re All Neurodiverse and The Neurodivergent Friendly Workbook of DBT Skills
Every social justice movement needs a set of principles to guide its actions and goals moving forward. When a movement is still new and developing, a set of principles is even more important in ensuring everyone who joins the movement, is on the same page. If you haven’t heard about the 10 Principles of Disability Justice (which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/gFvnkHrg), I was inspired by these principles and how we can apply them to the Neurodiversity Movement. You can find a further explanation of each principle in my book, We’re All Neurodiverse. As intellectual disability care services, your mission should extend beyond mere survival... It's about nurturing resilience in every individual we serve so that they thrive and continue to be empowered! Resilience is the dynamic interplay of inner strength and external support systems. One crucial external source? Support networks. Yet, distance often separates our individuals from their loved ones, limiting access to these vital networks. But fear not—where physical distance exists, we can bridge the gap with emotional connection and community bonds. Swipe through these slides to learn how to create robust support networks within your care services, empowering each individual to thrive! #resilience #careservice #disabilityservice #disabilitysupport #intellectualdisability

July is #MentalHealthLiberationMonth, but it’s also #DisabilityPrideMonth! There is no mental health liberation without Disability Pride! Disability Pride initially started as a day of celebration in 1990—the year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed. Disabilities can be physical, mental, and often invisible. Let’s honor all of our experiences and fight for a world where our bodies and minds are valued and supported.
