This week we are joining like minded professionals at the PA Downtown Center’s 2024 Statewide Active Transportation Summit in York, PA. Morgan, MCRP as she co-presents the “Newtown Borough Safety and Walkability Review” with Tara McLaughlin who served as Borough Council President during the project. The session will demonstrate how Newtown Borough, a 0.6-square-mile borough located in Bucks County, PA with a historic district, pursued a safety and walkability review that generated a list of pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements and identified steps to implement them. Austroads Webinar Recording: Safe Active Streets – an Overview of Western Australia’s Pilot Program The Department of Transport Western Australia has been working with Western Australian local governments to develop, trial and evaluate ‘safe active streets’ to encourage more people to walk, wheel and ride in their communities. The pilot program trialled and adapted common local area traffic management treatments to create 30 km/h environments with unique designs created that reflect local community needs and context. This webinar explored the origins of the program, how and why it started, shared high-level insights from the evaluation, including what worked, what didn’t and what was learnt along the way. Walking and biking in Ohio should be a safe, convenient and accessible transportation option for everyone. This plan will identify needs and priorities on the state-maintained roads in the district. This includes all State and US Routes outside of city boundaries in the seven counties. By identifying key active transportation connections on the state system, it could improve bicycle and pedestrian connectivity and support network development in communities across the district.

What can communities do better for people who bike? One resident of a Bronze-level BFC suggests focusing on connected routes, and we have to agree. Becoming a Silver or higher-level Bicycle Friendly Community doesn't happen overnight, but connecting local biking and walking routes is a winning strategy for encouraging more local active transportation. 🌲When we think of national parks, we envision pristine landscapes and the sounds of nature. However, in many places, the prevalent sound is that of vehicles. Congestion can degrade the visitor experience and, while cars remain integral to the national park journey for many North Americans, parks face the need to reconsider transportation plans as demand grows. Study Conclusion: Narrowing lanes from 10-12 to 9 feet improves safety for all.
NARROW LANES SAVES LIVES. Study: US CITIES have seen a growing demand for safer walking and biking options in recent years, but identifying solutions remains a challenge. One major finding is that roads with 10–12-foot lanes at 30-35 mph speed limits have a significantly higher number of crashes compared to those with 9-foot lanes. Narrowing lane widths at these speeds provides city leaders with an opportunity to improve safety for all roadway users. https://lnkd.in/gfNpj8wf

Are you a Rider on the Storm? Have you been caught up in Car Wars or faced a backlash on traffic reduction measures? I completely forgot to share this before! On a warm day last July, we wrapped up the Car Free Cities campaign with a hybrid event to share our learnings on how to deliver successful urban traffic reduction, bringing together local authorities, campaigners, residents and academics. A few highlights: Car Wars: Delivering Change Against a Backdrop of Misinformation’ focused on our new report Sound and Fury, which analysed the impact of London councillors’ positions on LTNs on the outcome of the 2022 local elections. We also heard from misinformation expert Stefan Rollnick and councillor Charlie Hicks who both highlighted the importance of procedural fairness and outcome fairness, and the difference between polled public opinion and perceived public opinion. We then had an interactive breakout session on Parklets and Parking, titled ‘Reclaiming the Streets’, with people doing pioneering work in reclaiming kerbside space for sustainable uses sharing their learnings and insights in small groups. For our afternoon session, Cities of the Future, we heard from different speakers on how to ensure that the shift away from car dependency increases equity and access for all our communities.
