This week, we’re marking key achievements on two of our standout projects—testaments to the power of collaboration and shared vision. At 61-65 Holborn Viaduct, the first concrete-encased steel column has been installed, a major step forward in delivering a transformative development that will span the Thameslink tunnel and provide much-needed student housing in the heart of London. Meanwhile, at 7 Millbank, we celebrated the bottoming-out ceremony, a proud moment recognising the progress made on this ambitious project, thanks to the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved. These milestones are a reflection of what’s possible when expertise, innovation, and partnership come together. #Bettertogether #SpecialistEngineeringContractor

Green light for final key structures to bring HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd into Birmingham 🚅🟢 The construction of two new viaducts to bring HS2 into Birmingham has been approved by local councils, marking a significant milestone for the project. These represent two of the eight ‘key design elements’ (KDEs) on the West Midlands leg of HS2. All eight KDEs are structures which are identified as being significant because of their size, proximity to communities, or location within sensitive areas. The first is the River Blythe Viaduct, which has received planning approval from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. A 475-metre low-lying structure just south of the new HS2 Interchange Station in Solihull, it’s designed to skim the flat, agricultural landscape as it crosses the River Blythe, the floodplain and Meriden Road near Hampton in Arden. A Stalled Landmark: Newcastle’s Swing Bridge 🌉 Struggles to Swing Back to Life As a Newcastle resident, it’s disappointing to see one of our industrial revolution landmarks, the Swing Bridge, stuck in place. This Grade II listed structure, which once symbolised Victorian engineering brilliance, hasn’t been able to swing open for five years. 🔹 Built in 1876, the Swing Bridge is a testament to Newcastle's industrial heritage. 🔹 Mechanical issues have left it immobile since 2019. 🔹 Despite hopes to restore it for its 150th anniversary in 2026, progress has been slow. The challenges are significant—complex engineering requirements and funding constraints—but the Port of Tyne is working with stakeholders to find a solution. As MP Chi Onwurah noted, "We need to make sure it is swinging again in time for its anniversary." This bridge is more than just a crossing; it’s a symbol of our city’s innovative spirit and history. Let’s hope efforts to restore it gain momentum, preserving this piece of Newcastle’s legacy for future generations. Source: BBC News #Newcastle #Heritage #SwingBridge #Engineering

We are now on site at St Edmund Hall, the £35m, 127-bed #Passivhaus student accommodation in Oxford, delivering an energy-optimised scheme and marking a step forward in our expansion within the education sector. Led by Director Aaron McCarthy, we have already progressed the project from an inherited BSRIA Stage 4i to Stage 5, assuming design responsibility, refining spatial coordination, and providing additional value engineering to increase cost efficiencies. Collaborating with Dowds Group, SDC Builders Ltd and their design team Wright & Wright Architects and Price & Myers, we will soon be installing upgraded M&E services and a sustainable framework throughout the development Read more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/dGW3yUNg #passivhaus #PassivhausTrust #Oxford #sustainbleengineereing #University Image credit: Wright & Wright Architects

Scientists and engineers from Swansea University, the University of Exeter and the University of Bath are looking to cut emissions from the built environment by exploring a different approach to constructing tall buildings. The LOCAST (Low-Carbon Structures) project has received £1.2m in funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The team said that while tall buildings use urban space efficiently, constructing them has a high carbon cost compared to the same floor space spread across several shorter buildings. “We’re at a point where heating and lighting are so efficient that most of the lifetime climate emissions from any new building come from making the concrete, steel and glass that go into it,” Professor Ian Walker, an environmental psychologist from Swansea University, who co-authored the funding bid, said in a statement. “Using less of these materials in tall buildings would put a big dent in the emissions from the built environment. But to do this, we need to understand how making tall buildings more lightweight would affect the people inside them.” Read more here 👇 https://lnkd.in/enSBKj3i #theengineer #LOCAST #lowcarbon #construction #civil #engineering

With the raising London Circuit project entering its final stages, construction will start on light rail to Commonwealth Park in February 2025. With Canberra expected to grow to more than 780,000 people by 2060 it's important we build this transport infrastructure to avoid the future traffic gridlock so many other cities face. The extension of light rail will support the delivery of more housing, new public spaces and better commercial precincts in our city centre. By 2028, workers, residents and visitors to the city centre will be able to more easily connect to more locations, including City West, New Acton, Commonwealth Park and Lake Burley Griffin, using three new light rail stops 🚋 As work gets underway on and around London Circuit, Commonwealth Avenue and Parkes Way, sections of London Circuit west will be closed to motorists and cyclists between Northbourne Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue. Find out how these changes impact you at: https://lnkd.in/gyEPMK8S
