Millennials and Gen Z workers in U.K. are deserting the bright lights of London and the South East traditional employment and lifestyle hotspots for a more bohemian and generational focused and of course more affordable way of life in northern cities like Manchester and Liverpool. London has become too expensive where rents and property prices are commonly taking up ever increasing crippling percentages of pay packets (as they always have as I recall my time there as a young architect in the 80’s and 90’s). The current young working generations have a different outlook on life and most are not focused on getting onto the property ladder like their parents were in the post war baby boomers case. Todays Gen Z are focused upon life experiences and a more sustainable work life balance and environmental concerns. This is also reflected in multiple career streams and less commitment to a “job for life” and the jettisoning of the “work to live - live to work” ethos. Companies are also recognising this and the relocating of BBC and ITV broadcasting giants and all the associated service industries to Manchester Salford Quays is a massive draw for many creative industry related jobs. Manchester is not just bad weather and top football clubs …

📑 We were proud to chair the launch of the new report from the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence . The report highlights the critical role housing providers play in supporting tenants, particularly in the face of reduced funding, the cost-of-living crisis, and challenges in the labour market. Key findings emphasize the importance of: • Person-centred, ‘back-to-basics’ support approaches • Collaboration between organisations to create greater impact • The potential for housing associations to drive inclusive growth The message is clear - no organisation can tackle these challenges alone. By connecting services, sharing learning, and listening to one another, we can achieve outcomes that are greater than the sum of our parts. Put your hands up to help shape the future! We're excited to announce our collaboration with Newcastle United Foundation - an initiative aimed at accelerating success by leveraging proven programmes and delivery methods. By combining the employer voice with targeted employability support, we’re working to empower Northumberland’s young people and economically inactive individuals with the skills and opportunities they need to enter the workforce. Recently, we gathered employers from across the county to discuss this approach, and their commitment to shaping these programmes highlights the collective impact we can have together. Our focus is to build on the success of the NU Futures programme and launch two pilot projects this autumn. These initiatives will connect young people with local employers, provide real-world insights through site visits, and deliver employability training tailored to the needs of our community. We’ve seen first-hand the challenges #Northumberland faces - like the migration of young talent and a significant number of economically inactive individuals who want to work. By coming together, we're not just talking about change; we’re making it happen. This is just the beginning, and we’re thrilled to see so many local businesses stepping up to be part of this journey. Let's continue to work together to create more employment choices, support our communities, and build a brighter future for Northumberland. Want to learn more or get involved? Reach out to team members Zoe Maylam or Liz Mayes, or visit our website. Together, we can make a difference. #ConnectNorthumberland #NUFCFoundation #CommunityGrowth #Employability #YouthOpportunities #Northumberland

Paul’s post highlights the importance of community engagement and participation in the context of the WorkWell pilot programme, which is aimed at assisting people with long-term sickness or disabilities to work. It emphasises the need for us as health and employment sectors to work in partnership to improve health and employment outcomes, particularly in areas affected by long-term deprivation and deindustrialisation. The places we as ICE Creates are working with and in every day • #humancentereddesign is crucial for designing a future for work that meet employers' skills needs and still support good health.
