Across the U.S. workforce, individuals have cultivated their skillsets through real-world experience - developing a blend of problem-solving skills and adaptability that are highly sought after in the workplace. To recognize this expertise, practical pathways to formal credentials are essential. Validating these skills can unlock new career opportunities and greater economic stability, ensuring that earned experience translates to professional advancement. PJMF partner Reach University, in collaboration with Western Governors University, is formalizing work-based learning pathways with their bold vision for apprenticeship degrees. Their National Center for the Apprenticeship Degree (NCAD) pairs tech literacy curriculum with on-the-job degree pathways - equipping individuals with the skills needed to thrive in the modern workforce. Deciding between a university education and an apprenticeship pathway is a pivotal moment for many young individuals. Each path offers distinct benefits and challenges, tailored to different learning styles and career aspirations. Reflecting on personal experience and broader observations, the contrasts and compliments of both avenues come into sharper focus. University education is traditionally academic, focusing on theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, and research skills. It's a broad canvas, offering a plethora of subjects, from the sciences to the humanities. For those who excel in academic settings and are driven by intellectual curiosity, university can be a rewarding journey. It often leads to careers requiring a degree or specific scholarly expertise. Yet, this route is not without its challenges. The financial burden of tuition fees and the pressure to secure a job post-graduation are significant. Moreover, for individuals who thrive in hands-on learning environments, the theoretical nature of university studies might not align with their preferred learning style. Apprenticeships present a compelling alternative, blending practical training with employment. This pathway allows learners to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field, earn while they learn, and develop specific skill sets aligned with industry needs. It's an excellent option for those who, like myself, may not initially feel academically inclined but possess a keen interest in practical learning and a desire to enter the workforce directly. Apprenticeships also offer a smoother transition into the job market, with many securing positions within their training companies. However, the scope of learning can be narrower, focused on specific trades or professions, which might limit broader academic exploration. Reflecting on my journey, starting with an apprenticeship ( my military career) was instrumental. The practical experience gained was invaluable, laying a solid foundation for my career. It wasn't until later in life, with this practical knowledge under my belt, that I felt equipped to tackle the academic world. The transition to university, then, felt like a natural progression, enhancing my practical skills with theoretical depth. This personal path underscores a key point: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to education and career development. For some, diving straight into academia opens up a world of possibilities. For others, the tangible, immediate learning of apprenticeships is the key that unlocks their potential. And for a few, like myself, a blend of both worlds, moving from hands-on experience to theoretical exploration, offers a fulfilling and rounded educational journey. The choice between a university and an apprenticeship pathway hinges on individual preferences, learning styles, and career goals. Both paths have their merits and can lead to successful outcomes.

IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) has today released a consultation on Strengthening Technical Qualifications at levels 4-6. As announced by the Government in September 2020, the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) will help people to take up opportunities by making funding available to pay for college or university courses. This will support them to train, retrain and upskill over the course of their working lives. As the Department for Education (DfE) set out in its LLE consultation response, for an Ofqual regulated technical qualification to receive LLE funding it will need to go through an Approval Gateway run by IfATE. The IfATE approval process will make sure only high-quality qualifications that give people the skills employers need receive LLE funding. The Department for Education has now announced the LLE Gateway will open in September 2025. This consultation will look at how to approve qualifications through the new gateway and join up with the way Higher Technical Qualifications, T Levels, and level 2 and 3 technical qualifications are already approved. It covers what the new categories should be and making sure proposed quals are fit for purpose, what needs to be in place to make sure employers benefit from the flexibility and targeted approach which funding modular learning offers and accessibility for all. The consultation closes on 1 April 2024 so there's plenty of time to consider what is being asked and submit quality responses. #ifate #consultation #lifelonglearning #LLE #technicalqualifications #categories #employersupport #learners #economy #modularlearning #flexibility #accessibilityforall https://lnkd.in/eN-pwFGG

“Higher education has struggled to adequately reach working learners — people with jobs and family responsibilities who don’t have time or money to earn a four-year degree. But the industry is resilient, and it usually figures out how to better serve students and to tap big markets,” writes Paul Fain in his recent Work Shift newsletter, The Job. Two universities — our parent organization Western Governors University and Georgia Institute of Technology — announced new initiatives to address the unique needs of this learner population. Georgia Institute of Technology launched the College of Lifetime Learning in an effort to double the number of degrees granted and nondegree learners reached by 2030. WGU acquired Craft Education to expand into apprenticeship degrees by connecting on-the-job training with competency-based degrees. “The forays by two very different institutions send a clear signal that four-year universities are getting more serious about the many millions of U.S. workers who lack a bachelor’s degree but are interested in pursuing more education and training.” https://lnkd.in/gCSGx_Tj

📣 Exciting News! The Teacher Apprenticeship Network is now an approved provider on the Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL)! 🎉 This is a significant milestone in our mission to expand pathways into teaching and create stronger pipelines for highly qualified educators. Being on the ETPL means that our teacher apprenticeship programs are now eligible for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding, helping us reach even more aspiring teachers. 💼 What does this mean for our partner school districts? ✅ Increased Access to Funding: School districts can now connect eligible apprentices with WIOA funds, reducing the financial barriers to becoming certified educators. ✅ Expanded Teacher Pipeline: Our inclusion on the ETPL helps us partner with districts to upskill paraprofessionals, substitutes, and career changers, ensuring a more robust and diverse teacher workforce. ✅ No-Cost Professional Development: Districts can benefit from apprentices receiving high-quality, no-cost preparation and support services, including mentoring and leadership development. ✅ Specialized Support: Our apprenticeship programs are designed to meet the needs of high-need areas like special education and STEM which means districts can fill critical vacancies with well-prepared candidates. We are proud to continue building pathways into the classroom with our district partners and look forward to empowering the next generation of educators! 🙌 #TeacherApprenticeship #ETPL #WorkforceDevelopment #Education #SchoolDistricts #TeacherPipeline #WIOA

Co-Founder & CEO at InnovateHer | Advocate for Diversity, Tech & the Next Generation | Event Host & Speaker
As the recent A-level and BTEC results have shown, the landscape of education is shifting. It was great to read in this article that young people are turning away from traditional university degrees in favour of apprenticeships and vocational training. Yet, there’s a major disconnect - while the demand for apprenticeships has surged, opportunities remain limited, creating a significant barrier for young people eager to earn while they learn. At InnovateHer, we’re witnessing this shift firsthand. We work tirelessly to create more inclusive and diverse opportunities in the tech and digital sectors, especially for young women, but the current system doesn’t support everyone. As this piece states, nearly one-third of young people in the UK are left without training or education by age 18, this not only hinders their potential but also undermines the UK’s economic future. We need; 🖐 More funding for apprenticeships 🖐 Greater flexibility in training programmes 🖐 A commitment to ensuring that every young person has access to the skills and opportunities they need to succeed. 🖐 A system that works for everyone, not just those pursuing traditional academic paths Hands up if you agree that we need to invest more in our young people - because the future depends on their success! #SkillsGap #Apprenticeships #EducationReform #FutureOfWork #InnovateHer #DiversityInTech #TechForGood https://lnkd.in/etJmnXCG
