What I have learned in the teaching and coaching of writing is that there are so many parts of writing! When I observe classrooms of writers, I often find that the focus is mostly on only ONE aspect, and that is what is transcribed on the page. If we know that our students struggle with applying writing skills, then we know we need to find out how to fix that, and that most likely means a change in the way writing is thought of and taught in our schools. In this episode, I challenge you to consider what you believe writing to be and share my own thoughts on writing and how to incorporate all aspects of it in the instruction in our classrooms. One of my favorite things to do when I visit any school is to check out the student work on display. Teachers teach their hearts out everyday and I love seeing what students produce. Benchmark Advance Units are centered around real-world topics designed to teach students to think critically using complex texts, higher-order thinking, and authentic reading/writing tasks. Today, my heart skipped a beat to see evidence of student learning on display and celebrated!
