On July 2, 2024, the Richmond Times-Dispatch published an article by MWC's Jim Dyke looking at his recent trip to the Danube River and how it highlights the way Virginia tells its own history. The former Secretary of Education from 1990 to 1994, noted that he spent “considerable time lately advocating for our education system to fully address Virginia’s history – the good, the bad and the ugly.” Looking at his own multicultural family, Dyke examines how his wife’s Jewish family originated in Hungary and Poland only to be killed or expelled from these countries and how their long history in these lands have been nearly erased. “Only in synagogue displays did we better understand how dreadfully the Jews, prior to extermination, were treated…” Dyke noted that “Just as some in Virginia want to avoid the discussion of the ugly parts of Virginia’s history, such as the horrors of slavery, Massive Resistance, and the Jim Crow era, while simultaneously seeking to eliminate DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), Europe, too, must better acknowledge its horrific past in order to avoid history repeating itself.” Read More: https://lnkd.in/eXbghPaU

BLACK PASTORS SELLING THE BLACK COMMUNITIES - As a young Catholic priest, I had the privilege of working with a group of black pastors, mostly non-Catholics. I was the diocesan spiritual advisor of African American (Black) Catholics Ministry. Needless to say, that was when I learned more than enough of my black brothers and sisters pastors. I later left the group for the military chaplaincy. There is a triad that have held our black communities and inner cities in bondage and perennially impoverished even with almost a century of voting Democrat: black pastors, black activists and black politicians. The triad actively work together to fleece, siphon and redirect funds meant for local communities programs to their bank accounts. Obama once worked for such local community organizing group in Chicago and ended up selling his soul to the devil - the reason why he couldn’t return back to Chicago and have not utter a word with all going on in Chicago including high crimes and high murder rate!! That’s why these black pastors continually desecrate the black churches by allowing these corrupt politicians to use their pulpits to bambuzzled and lie and make empty promises year after year, elections after elections, and our black communities still remain hell holes! Yet, we are quick to play victims and blame white folks and white supremacy for our problems. Look at what’s going on around the country and who are being pushed out from their communities programs facilities to accommodate immigrants crossing the borders. Whose policies opened wide the borders - Democrats! Who are losing jobs to these immigrants? Mostly black folks!!

Haiti, Freedom, and French Colonialism I read CLR James's "The Black Jacobins" as an undergraduate at Cornell and it changed my life. James paints a true picture of how the French Revolution impacted Haiti and slavery in the Americas. The narrative that whites ended slavery is inherently false: rather, the actions of Toussaint Louverture and many others forced the issue of slavery. Revisionist historians are overly fond of the notion that whites, seeing the error of their ways, chose to abandon slavery. Even after the decolonization of its empire, France -- the land of "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" -- continues to control its former colonies in ways that the larger world fails to fully comprehend. Imperialist monetary policies from Paris continue to cripple domestic economies and undermine democracy. Colonialism in Africa won’t have meaningfully come to an end until true economic sovereignty is allowed to flourish.

The Global Black History section at Public Books (which I co-edit) is commemorating the 220th anniversary of Haitian independence with a series on the legacy and history of abolition, the lingering problem of sovereignty, and Haiti’s contribution to the development of human rights across the world. https://lnkd.in/eWbbTi4z

A liberal-minded approach to history requires two essential habits: observation and sympathy. Short of genuine, thorough observation, past events are easily reduced to less than what they are. Short of sympathy, our forebears almost always fall prey to condemnation. Lucas Morel's review at Public Discourse stirs both kind of habits of the historical mind. The topic is a book on Lincoln: Allen C. Guelzo's Our Ancient Faith: Lincoln, Democracy, and the American Experiment. Morel gives us a preview of how Guelzo works through Lincoln's revisitation of the Founding, marked as it was by American slavery and American liberty. To Lincoln's mind, America could not continue to lay claim to being a land of equality and freedom if slavery continued. At the same time, the discontinuation of slavery had its moral contours in the Founding. Lincoln's reading of both slavery since the Founding and the recovery of America's moral bearings in light of the Founding have remained normative for all who have ears to hear. Can America Survive? In this must-read for historians, political pundits, Christians, and all Americans concerned about the Republic's preservation, Davis fearlessly tackles the question: Can America thrive as a Democratic Republic without its Christian roots? The conflict we face is not merely political or cultural; it is a spiritual battle, and the answers lie within the pages of this pivotal book.

This is a solid piece aimed at accurately defining and understanding what Christian nationalism is, what it is not, and why we need to all be aware of the very real threats it presents to democracy. Also, it's always fulfilling when my work on Christian nationalism with Sam Perry is cited in the NYT! Indiana University Indianapolis https://lnkd.in/gptDQMrv

New documents have shed light on the recondite origins and inner abstruse workings of the shadowy Society for American Civic Renewal (SACR), including methods for judging the beliefs of potential members on topics such as Christian nationalism, and indications that its founders sought inspiration in an apartheid-era South African white men-only group, the Afrikaner-Broederbond. These documsnts also show that Boise State University Professor and Claremont think tank scholar Scott Yenor tried to coordinate SACR’s activities with other initiatives, including an open letter on “Christian marriage”. One expert says that one of the new documents – some previously reported in Talking Points Memo – use biblical references that suggest a preparedness for violent struggle against the current “regime”. The SACR is a secretive far-right men-only organization with an emphasis on Christian nationalism and a desire to open branches across the US. #sacr #christiannationalism https://lnkd.in/ezXfFhPR
