Nigeria generates a staggering 1.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, with much of it ending up in landfills or polluting our rivers and oceans. This is an urgent environmental challenge, but it’s also an opportunity for innovative solutions. What ideas do you think could help tackle plastic waste in Nigeria? Greenpeace took a bold stance by sending back waste that had been shipped to Ghana. By returning the waste to its EU origin, Greenpeace sends a powerful message: accountability. We cannot continue to export our waste and turn a blind eye to its repercussions on vulnerable populations and ecosystems elsewhere. As individuals and organizations, we have a collective duty to advocate for sustainable practices and hold ourselves and others accountable for the waste we generate. #WasteManagement #EnvironmentalResponsibility #CircularEconomy

Despite the fact that climate change is a global problem, significant local and community-based effect can be made. A community-based solution entails giving vulnerable community members the authority to take the lead in cleanup operations and to actively engage in them. Community-based solutions offer education and training to enable the continuation of cleanup activities while utilizing the talents and resources of local residents. On such a vast topic, smaller, local actions can have an impact. This week my colleague and I produced a story of one social enterprise that is helping Lagos tackle the plastic waste problem. Of the estimated 870,000 tonnes of plastic waste generated in Lagos annually, authorities say only about 12 percent of that is collected by waste pickers or recyclers. Startup Statewide Waste and Environmental Project (SWEEP) collects and processes 13 tons of plastic waste monthly. SWEEP employs at least 300 women, who collect and bring in plastic waste every day #plasticfree #recycle #pollution #climatechange #plasticpollution

Plastic waste mismanagement in Ghana 🇬🇭 We all know that our cities are messy because of how we dispose plastic waste right. I strongly believe continues clean-up activities is not even the solution to Plastic waste pollution but at least it get the problem part solved. On the 6th of March which happened to be the celebration of Ghana’s Independence day, my clean-up volunteer group( Spino Fight Against Plastic waste) joined hands with other clean-up volunteer groups in the University of Cape Coast and in the Cape Coast Metropolis to organise a clean-up project. Our aim was to do public sensitization on plastic waste mismanagement and also clean some few community gutters to ensure that plastic waste left in gutters are been taken out to avoid beach plastic pollution. Let encourage one another to do more and bring some sanity in among our lives. Together, let build a world to be inherited #🇬🇭 #plasticsindustry #cleanghana

Africa generates ~10% of today’s total global plastic waste (35 m tons/y). Only 5-10% is recovered, 50% is landfilled, 35%-40% leaks into nature or is openly burned! Driven by demographics and consumption plastic waste volumes in Africa are to increase 5-fold by 2050, to ~200 m tons/ y. If policies are implemented to support waste infrastructure build-up, we could see the plastic waste recycling rate increase to ~25%, whilst strongly decreasing leackage and open burning!
