THIS is why Senior Site Managers struggle to become Project Managers 👇 The Senior Site Managers I work with in the commercial construction industry often come from trade qualified backgrounds. Rising through the ranks - from the tools to site foreman, site manager, and eventually senior site manager. Many of these professionals have 15 years or more of experience, having stayed loyal to two or three employers during that time. They’ve earned their stripes. They’ve proven themselves by delivering projects from start to finish. But they’re caught in a loop. Why? Because they’re too bloody good at what they do, and their employers know it. Finding someone to replace them? Almost impossible. Senior Site Managers are often the backbone of successful projects. And yet, I hear their stories of loyalty met with empty promises of promotion to Project Manager: “Just get this one across the line, then it’s your turn.” Only it never comes. Meanwhile, they’re not compensated for their expertise, pushing many to reach out to people like me to find them what they deserve. It raises questions. Why aren’t we training enough new talent to fill these critical roles? Why don’t we give our experienced leaders a chance to step up, share their knowledge, and truly grow? I'd love to hear your thoughts - whether you’ve lived this story or have ideas on changing the narrative. Let me know below.

The Engineering Manager.. 🥅 Few days back my technical lead called me a PM or a project manager, I held back and said no, I am not a project manager but rather an Engineering Manager. This caught me thinking, what's the difference between an engineering manager and a project manager. Engineering manager is of course a project manager, but way beyond a project manager. There are more opportunities and capabilities when you consider yourself as an engineering manager over a project manager. There is an engineering aspect to than just managing the team and scheduling and coordination. You have to contribute towards solutions and help your team technically. When you are from an engineering background you definitely know the pain of your team, so you will be able to reason with your client to help protect ur team, which not every project manager will be able to do. I was a pure technical person and never once wanted to become a Manager let alone Engineering Manager. I was shy and scared to speak to people, even my own manager and my team. My whole attitude towards Engineering Management changed because of two experiences during my tenure of being EM for the first time. First, when one of my team Ashwin Deepu CS told me that I am one of the reasons that he thrives in the team. This struck me and it changed my whole perspective of being a manager. Second, at one of the goals and objectives discussion session with my manager and my mentor Shama Hamid, who breathed into me, that as a manager your first goals should be to think about how you can make your team look good and help them achieve their goals. Maybe these are known facts to the thousands of Managers around the globe, but I wanted to put this down as these incidents touched my heart and my inner self changed from that point. I became an Engineering Manager for a reason, not because of the love for management but because of the love for the people around me. To know the people around me. To empathize with them and ensure they have a good working environment and a good work life balance. To stand by them and help them thrive in their career and aspirations. Engineering Manager is an amazing role which I have fallen in love with. #EngineeringManager #firstpost #Goals

Baker is more than just a place where you put in your time. Here, you get to touch projects, set your own path, and build a team that you’re going to know about inside and out, care about, and be with for years to come. Imagine being a project manager or superintendent and working side by side with a team you’ve worked hard to build over the years. They become like family. Over time, you get to know their own families, and you hear their stories. When you’ve built a team like that, you want to protect that team and keep it intact. But in the construction industry, a lot of times workers go from project to project, uncertain if there will be a next project. At Baker, we work hard to feed the project pipeline so our co-workers never have that sense of worry of where they will go next. Our project leaders are given the resources to put their people first and ensure that those who embody Baker’s core values — People, Honor, and Grit — will have the comfort of knowing that their next job will be there. Baker’s project leaders are then able to build more cohesive teams, which ultimately makes for better projects that result in career-building roles. Because at the heart of our company is growth for people and opportunities for them to build the life they want to live through long-standing careers.

People often associate building a network with leadership, or being in a senior position. In fact, you should be looking to build your network from day one in your career as a building services engineer. Use every project, meeting, call and industry event as a chance to build relationships with your peers. Whether they be other engineers, architects, project managers or trades! One thing I’ve learnt in the 8 years of recruiting in Sydney’s building services sector…. The market is tiny! You never know when you’ll cross paths again.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had many people reach out to ask about my plans moving forward, and I’m grateful for the support and interest. Recently, someone in the recruitment industry asked what type of roles I’d be interested in. My response was, “Construction Manager or possibly Director of Construction—it seems in line with my progress and experience.” Their response surprised me: “I disagree, your resume says out-of-work Superintendent.” It got me thinking about how the perception of certain roles has evolved. Being a Superintendent was once a prestigious and highly regarded position in construction, a role that blended leadership, technical expertise, and on-the-ground decision-making. Yet, it seems that prestige has shifted over time. I can’t help but wonder: Are we losing sight of the value these roles bring to the industry? It’s no surprise that many seasoned professionals are heading back to the field, operating equipment, and focusing on their craft. I remain proud of the work I’ve done and excited about the opportunities ahead. If you’d like to connect or discuss opportunities, I’ve attached my CV here for reference. Let’s keep the conversation going about the evolution of our industry and the roles that drive it forward.
