As the demand for skilled engineers continues to rise, our series showcasing the talent, growth, and contributions of apprentices within the civil engineering sector, aims to highlight the great work and dedication of our apprentices to help inspire future candidates, as well as throwing a spotlight on the importance of mentorship and practical skills development. Apprenticeships have become a vital pathway for developing the next generation of professionals and our apprentice civil engineer Cameron Cooke, based in the Northern region, has demonstrated over the last two years, the value of hands-on learning and is an inspiration for other young people looking to join the industry, helping to address the ongoing skill shortage. APPRENTICESHIPS: AN EMPLOYER'S VIEW Powers, is approaching the fourth year of its L3 Geospatial Apprenticeship Scheme. Here are the pros and cons of hiring a Level 3 Apprentice: Pros They learn the correct, text book way of carrying out their role (not learning piece-meal from whoever's available in the office to teach them). They hit the ground running and start doing simple jobs independently within nine months. They have confidence, due to what they've learned, and they can happily challenge decision making on site and in the office, reducing errors in all measured surveys. Running a geospatial training programme at our company alongside what's being learned at college creates wraparound training and embeds information fast. Powers is learning and improving alongside its apprentices. Offering apprenticeships shows people entering the profession that as a company, we are serious about their education, learning and development. Powers service quality levels have increased ten-fold to its clients as ALL members of the team have the correct knowledge, confidence and understanding to carry out their role. Productivity levels go off the scale when apprentices become qualified and they are in the office full time. Very often, apprentices want to continue their learning so we're looking forward to the launch of Sheffield Hallam University's Level 6 in Geospatial Mapping and Science Specialist Degree Apprenticeship in February 2025. Cons Having an apprentice away from the office one day a week or for weeks at a time (block release) can make planning work difficult. Turnover may be stunted as a result. The Minimum Wage is now so high that some SME companies are reticent about taking on apprentices who are out of the office for 20% or their working week (or for block release weeks). Companies are in effect 'paying' for their apprentice to attend college. As a team, we are sometimes challenged on the way we do things because 'we've always done it that way' (in effect, Powers is benefitting from the most up to date learning too). That's it! Not many cons and these are far outweighed by increased productivity levels once an apprentice is qualified. So, go ahead and try it, it's the best thing we ever did!!
We're proud to announce our continued commitment to bridging the geospatial skills gap through our comprehensive apprenticeship scheme. Here's how we're making a difference: 🔍 Study & Training: Our apprentices attend Riverside Sixth Form College one day a week, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Plus, they benefit from our internal training program to ensure they hit the ground running. 📅 Course Duration: Each apprenticeship spans two years and is Government-funded, with Powers contributing just 5%. 🏗️ Why It Matters: Architects, civil engineers, and construction companies – it's crucial to ensure your survey company is fostering the next generation of skilled surveyors. Ask them how their team is gaining geospatial qualifications. 🌍 Keep the Course Alive: We need more apprentices to join us at Cronton to keep this vital course running. Let’s create a strong foundation in geospatial knowledge together! Join us in shaping the future of geospatial surveying. #Apprenticeship #GeospatialSkills #FutureSurveyors #PowersApprenticeship #CrontonCollege #RiversideCollege

It’s encouraging to see more and more young people choosing a trade as a career path and the structural steel industry is an avenue well worth considering – an apprenticeship in structural steel opens doors to many opportunities within the construction industry and beyond. We’ve been celebrating our apprentices since 2016, when the SCNZ Apprentice of the Year award debuted. In the time since, we’ve observed a steady stream of outstanding apprentices whose skills, drive and willingness to learn have helped them to achieve exceptional outcomes. Importantly, the award is also a nod to the industry’s drive to safeguard its future, which is backed up by the numbers: 70 percent of structural steel contractors employ an average of five apprentices. Here, we share the experience and drivers of some of the companies that are training our next generation of skilled tradespeople. We also tracked down some of our award winners and runners-up to find out what impact completing an apprenticeship in structural steel has had on their careers. Read more here and stay tuned for an upcoming series of our structural steel apprentice stories: https://lnkd.in/g2H3iSbn To learn more about the SCNZ Young Apprentice of the Year Award and how to enter for 2024, click here: https://lnkd.in/g8qd_zYy #steelconstruction #structuralsteel #steelawards #apprenticeoftheyear #dedication #skill #steelfutures #careersinsteel

An interesting recent article by Thomas Johnson on the much-talked-about apprenticeships in the civil engineering industry. Four apprentices share their perspectives on the benefits and challenges associated with this path. A great insight for individuals and organizations in the sector to reflect on.

Civil Construction is the backbone of all infrastructure, including housing. How can Federal and State government priorities continue to omit civil trades from incentives that other less critical trades receive? Starting from 1 July 2024 the Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System will enter Phase 2. Given that the Civil Apprenticeships continue to be unrecognised, and do not appear on the Federal Priority List, under this new framework, Civil Apprentices after 1 July will now no longer receive Federal training support payments, and their employers will not receive any hiring incentives. Additionally, Civil Apprentices will not be eligible for the New Energy Apprentice Support Payment and female civil apprentices will also miss out on new Tailored Support Frameworks support.
