McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd have been awarded the main construction works for a major new green transport initiative for Dundee City Council. “The main works project, delivered via the SCAPE Scotland framework, will include installing 350 electrical vehicle charging points supported by a solar panel array on the roof, a battery storage system, car share spaces, and an e-bike hire service. When completed, the existing ground floor of the car park will be fully pedestrianised and include information points and meeting spaces. In the UK, many new developments are still being constructed on greenfield sites with minimal consideration for transport infrastructure. A quick search on Rightmove for new housing developments in South Wales showed that rail links are almost non-existent. Instead, descriptions emphasise proximity to city centres and major roads. The Plasdwr ‘Garden Village’ development in Cardiff, for instance, is a community of 7,000 homes with only a reserved space for light rail stations – if a line is ever built. This highlights a need for better integration of transport and housing to create sustainable, accessible communities. We partnered with Westminster City Council, in collaboration with FM Conway Ltd, to deliver a pioneering low-carbon footway trial on King Street. This project, part of the council’s planned maintenance programme, used innovative methods to cut carbon emissions while maintaining the durability and iconic style of Westminster's streets. What makes this project stand out? 🔧 Electric equipment reduced transport emissions with on-site charging facilities. 🚴 Materials were delivered via electric vehicles and cargo bikes. 🧱 Marshalls optimised the paving design, including reducing slab thickness by 13mm, cutting 4kg of embodied carbon per m². 📉 An overall 79% reduction in operational emissions, 46% in embodied carbon, and significant savings in travel and deliveries. By refining equipment, operations, and material specifications—such as using Marshalls Pavebed, Pavebond, and Pavejoint—the trial sets a baseline for sustainable highway projects in Westminster and beyond. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲!  We’re thrilled to share what our team Degnan and our key suppliers have been up to! Progress has been chugging along with some major milestones reached: 𝐎𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤: with the structural steel for the Light Service Facility (LSF) building rising fast, bringing this new facility to life.  𝐊𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧’ 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬: Earthworks are nearly wrapped up, paving the way (literally!) for track installation. Overhead wiring structures and new light poles are up, adding both safety and style to the site.  𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲: Access and maintenance roads are coming together, creating smoother paths for everyone on-site.  𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞: Stormwater and utility services are almost finished, ensuring we’re prepared for whatever weather comes our way! But it’s not all hard hats and steel beams; we’re also making sure our 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐠 friends are hopping around happily! Our conservation efforts are helping protect and connect these greenies right alongside our progress. Momentum is building and we’re excited to keep you posted as we roll toward completion of this essential project for Melbourne’s new High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMTs). The Degnan team is working alongside Downer who is undertaking the long-term maintenance of the 70-7 car HCMTs.
