What do stained glass art and quantum computing have in common? London-based designer and producer of architectural glass art, Oksana Kondratyeva, recently displayed her quantum-inspired stained glass art at the British Glass Biennale. Kondratyeva first saw a photograph of Rigetti’s chip packaging a few years ago and was struck by its symmetry and design, and was reminded of the rose windows of medieval cathedrals. In Physics World, she shares the fascinating history of stained glass, how scientific innovation has forged the art form over centuries, and the process of creating a “quantum rose.” Learn more in the feature article published today: https://lnkd.in/dCsqUg_E

Lovely new site for CDWA based on Quire, launched by the Getty. Well done! What is particularly useful is that we can link to specific sections, for discussion. Of course what is close to my heart is the section on "Subject Matter" https://lnkd.in/gzAhYQff Looking at the examples, every single item would benefit from assigning ICONCLASS codes instead of using English words to describe the item. It is a lacuna that the use of controlled vocabularies does not get a more thorough treatment in CDWA. Yes, it is mentioned in passing under section 16.4, but almost as an afterthought. Would be great to contribute to a revision of future editions with more examples applying ICONCLASS.
Excited to announce that Categories for the Description of Works of Art (CDWA) is now available on Quire! CDWA is a set of guidelines for the description of art, architecture, and other cultural works. CDWA represents best practice for cataloging, based on surveys and consensus building with the user community. “The CDWA has long served as a foundational resource for the international image cataloging community across the spheres of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. Getty is pleased to present this enduring resource in a new, sleek, and user-friendly way, offered via Quire, our digital publishing framework. Quire is an ideal format for the CDWA as it pairs elegant navigation across different types of devices with long-term durability,” said Nancy Um, associate director for research and knowledge creation at the Getty Research Institute.
