Big shout out to the team at Whitaker Construction Company, Inc. In the years I have been in construction technology have had the opportunity to see over 1000 construction companies and how they select, adopt, and partner with technology. The team at Whitaker has done a phenomenal job at this process every step of the way. Congrats to Dave Wickam, CEM, Brent Hunziker, David Putnam and so many others at Whitaker on your leadership, maturity, and success with this process and it is a great roadmap for others to follow. It shows that Brett Nielsen started at Whitaker as a laborer and grew through many positions to become the President of Whitaker. What are some of things they have done well that we can all learn from? Team: They involved folks from various office rolls, field, shop, and yard into the process. I see leadership too often remove themselves from the process, or worse, just pick stuff with out involving all the folks that will use it. Partners: Whitaker invests in Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP), Associated General Contractors of America, CFMA, to learn and share with peers. They invest in FMI joining peer groups and training with Brian Moore Mike Clancy Will Gruy. They involve tech partners like Viewpoint to align their data integration, tech map and tech roadmap. Customers: They checked with references like Brandon Pensick at Ferreira Construction Co., Inc. Platform: They did not want another bandaid. They looked at all the hardware, software, mobile, integrations, as well as CS and installation process. Accountability: They met with Tenna leadership like Austin Conti and Karen Wuerfl , spent time with Jose Cueva and Ryan Lunar, got to know Thomas Hollingsworth and me maybe better than they wanted! Was it fast and easy? Nope, but the ounce or prevention is worth the pound of cure. Just like good design and plan leads to good build. We all need to stop throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks, stop layering on point solutions on top of other point solutions. Congrats and thank you to the team at Whitaker for your investment, trust, partnership, and most importantly leadership over the past couple of years. One of the concerns I had before leaving consulting was I was afraid I would lose out on one of the fun parts of engineering which is developing creative solutions to problems. Fortunately (and it turns out I was very wrong to be concerned), my career with Simpson has offered me plenty of opportunities to exercise the "right" part of the brain!
