There’s some interesting news from across the pond in the UK, as reported in a recent issue of Cold Chain News. Here’s a quick excerpt… “Oakland International has launched several initiatives to help address the gender imbalance in the logistics industry. “Operating flexible shift patterns, trialling workplace childcare facilities, and offering the same pay rates irrespective of gender for both part-time and full-time workers, are all aimed to enhance gender diversity,” the company says. “Oakland believes a mix of masculinity and femininity brings benefits including alternative thinking, increased productivity, reliability, and retention, and that by attracting more female talent and providing a platform for career development benefits all parties.” “Women represent around 7% of the logistics sector workforce which employs over 2 million people, and although female HGV driver numbers are increasing, they still only account for 0.7% of the UK’s qualified HGV drivers.” The situation here in the USA is very similar when it comes to gender diversity in trucking. I recently engaged with another recruitment Enlighten Supply Pool London, and they scheduled me for a trial day. During our initial conversation, I inquired about compensation for the trial, and I was assured that payment would be provided. However, following the trial, they ghosted me for two consecutive days and disregarded my inquiries, effectively ignoring the situation. Moreover, when confronted, the consultant shifted blame onto me and said why would they pay me for two hours? This lack of accountability is concerning, and happens more often than we think. Upon escalating the matter to the senior consultant, I am still awaiting a response. Unfortunately, my experience seems to reflect a broader trend within the recruitment industry in London, where agencies frequently underpay, deceive, or neglect their candidates. It’s imperative to share these experiences so that people are more aware about which agencies to pick. Another tip being please get the confirmation on an email, don’t go for work otherwise. I got confirmation for work over text but they didn’t mention about the pay. My previous experiences with other agencies have been notably more professional.
