Addressing the climate crisis is going to require way more electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers and other specialized construction tradespeople than we have today. That’s why it’s so encouraging to read the stats in this piece: Gen Z is driving a spike in vocational school enrollment and demand for paid apprenticeships, and that’s because these non-college career paths offer good, family-sustaining wages and an opportunity for entrepreneurship.

The lack of skilled individuals in our sector is a growing concern. Qualifications are crucial, but being able to apply knowledge effectively is equally important. It's essential to balance qualifications with practical skills. Within B.S. 7671 and requirements of Skills and qualifications, there is a start to repair the damage caused by the dreaded part P short course in the electrical trade. Let's focus on nurturing well-rounded professionals who excel both academically and in hands-on tasks. It's time for colleges to develop courses and skill training that, upon finishing their apprenticeships and gaining their gold card, enable individuals to think through problems effectively. Let's work towards eliminating the common issues we encounter in our trades. Until the reward to course providers once again becomes education-based, over qualification this will not change. Also, it's time the government should treat electricity as they do gas as both are dangerous and have risk to life in the unprofessional hands and stop the watering down of this country skill base. end of rant

We need more of these stories told to promote these apprenticeship programs, which are real win-win-wins for the employers, the employees and the communities in which the companies can grow.

Did you know in many post-grad apprenticeships, apprentices earn college credits? Some even finish with an associates degree at no cost. "Nearly 80% of respondents in Jobber’s survey said their parents wanted them to go to college." In our work, we find most high school students that already know they want to go in to a trade have a family member they've seen make a career off it. Choosing a lifelong career at 17, 18 is scary - especially if you don't know anyone in the field you're interested in. Central Midwest Carpenters has Representatives and Outreach Specialists (like Hope Harp!), visiting classrooms, technical schools, and career days constantly to make up for the decades parents and educators spent pushing kids into college and student debt. Now we're seeing students taking control of their career; picking trades like carpentry or welding because classroom learning isn't for them, they like figuring something out with their hands, or getting to physically see what they accomplish at the end of the day. They can make those choices confidently by visiting apprenticeship training centers, talking to instructors about the path, with the support of their high school teachers and their family, even when their families work in healthcare or tech. Good read on the growing interest in the trades by young people. The construction industry has been working hard to change the narrative on trades vs college at a grass roots level. As the price of college tuition continues to grow and the job prospects for those college degrees seem more uncertain, building trades careers are becoming more and more attractive. As construction leaders, we need to keep our foot on the gas and continue to invest in skills and leadership training for this younger generation. This investment will not only fill the needs of US infrastructure construction today, but provide for the next generations more technical construction needs. #tradescareers #construction #apprenticeship

“Get out of your comfort zone, it’s where I’ve done most of my learning.” “You’re only as strong as your team – make sure you learn about each other.” “It’s been tough, but it’s given everyone a chance to get their ideas out.” “It’s made me realise it’s ok to not know something and it’s ok to ask questions and ask for help.” Just some of the insights shared during the final presentations of Carrs Engineering Group apprentices after completing their programme at our Eskdale centre. These reflections are an example of how learning through adventure pushes boundaries, fosters resilience and builds teamwork. It's a space where failure is embraced as part of the learning process, empowering apprentices to adapt and grow. These skills are not only applicable to work but also to life.
