As many of you know, tonight is the U.S.A. current president's State Of The Union (SOTU) address, but do you know the brief history behind this now-annual historical and civic event? Here are a few brief highlights... 1."SOTU" is an annual message delivered to a joint session of U.S. Congress. 2. Its focus is mainly centered on the nation's current condition. 3. The most common national topics covered are the budget, economy, news, agenda, progress, achievements, and the President's priorities & legislative proposals. 4. SOTU also fulfills the U.S. Constitutional requirement in Article II, Section 3, for a POTUS to "give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, & recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he/she shall judge necessary & expedient." However, here's a little "bar trivia..... Did you know that during the 19th century (1800's), the POTUS only submitted it in written form to Congress?  Tes indeed, it was not until 1913 that the 28th POTUS, Woodrow Wilson, began delivering it in person to rally support for his agenda. The Return of the Presidential Putsch https://lnkd.in/gcxXggB3 When faced with the next executive power grab globally, the United States and other like-minded democracies should consistently call a spade a spade, and work quickly in concert with other regional actors for strong coordinated action to reverse such events. In addition, the United States should rapidly deploy all the legislative coup restrictions that currently apply to military coups abroad, including the suspension of economic and security assistance. A failure to do so will only incentivize future aspiring autocrats to forego self-rule in favor of self-coup.

In case you missed the news this past weekend, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson ignored the threats of the obstructionist members of his party and brought legislation to the floor to send critical funds to our allies in Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. All three bills passed with strong bipartisan majorities. This is the kind of thing the United States, as the preeminent world leader, must do to ensure stability and survival of western values. Despite the objections of those members of Congress who naively think that an isolationist approach to foreign policy will lead to anything other than a diminished America and emboldened enemies, with this vote, America is strengthening our alliances and improving our own national and economic security. While this was an important milestone, the reality is that finding bipartisan agreement on big issues is the kind of thing America should be doing every day...not something that is so rare that we find ourselves in amazed disbelief when it actually happens. But maybe, just maybe, this is what members of Congress needed to see in order to believe in the power of cooperation once again. At least, that's my hope. Time will tell if this is the start of something positive or if it was just a blip in a sad, continued phase of dysfunction. William - you know me pretty well by this point.
