While traditional tobacco ads are banned on U.S. TV, a loophole allows characters to smoke on streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu, indirectly promoting smoking. This disproportionately affects minority communities. A recent study by Onyeaka et al in JAMA Network Open surveyed 5,775 people about their exposure to tobacco advertising over the last 3 months. Exposure varied by race, education, and smoking status. Overall, 12% of respondents saw tobacco ads on streaming services. Exposure was highest among Black respondents (19.4%), Hispanic respondents (16.4%), those with a high school education or less (16.4%), people with incomes below $20,000 (17.6%), and current smokers (17%). Given the connection between smoking and diseases like cancer, more public health efforts and regulations are needed for this type of content. https://lnkd.in/enfRdfN7

Foresight Strategist | Signal spotter | Curious Human | All Opinions Are My Own. See the disclaimer.
Is #tobacco imagery rising in entertainment? I could not help the feeling that there was more #tobaccoimagery in 2024 than in previous years. The thought was paralyzing as I was watching yet another show where main characters were lighting up. It was bizarre to imagine after spending significant amount of time watching another country’s programming where every TV show had blurred images of smoking and (at times annoying but very necessary) banner at the bottom of the screen reminding of #smoking #healthrisks. But this is 2024, could we possibly experience more #cigarette imagery in entertainment as many countries consider new #anti-smoking laws? Examples like #UK government's proposed #legislation to prevent anyone born since 2009 to legally buy cigarettes came to mind. Or #NewZealand's similar legislation (as of July '24 said to be scraped). #Mexico with some of the strictest #antismoking laws, including #smokingbans at beaches & parks. #Portugal aiming to have a “#smokefree generation" by 2040, debating a law that would stop bars, cafes and gas stations from selling tobacco. #Canada hoping to reduce tobacco use to <5% by 2035 & wanting to print health warnings on individual cigarettes. #Netflix commitments to eliminate smoking in programming rated TV-14 and PG-13 or under. I needed hard core evidence and data. So I did what any normal researcher would do at 11:30pm, I went to google search :D. According to #Vanityfair, it was not just my imagination. There was a rise of #tobaccoimagery that can be explained by more content featuring 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, a necessary attribute for the character development. Plus, #cultural context, #OldHollywood’s trick using smoking as a substitute for sex, like in the iconic scene in Irving Rapper’s 1942. According to the #TruthInitiative, the total # and % of '22 films with any tobacco was 40/114 films (35%). The report also stated the # of #tobacco depictions in top shows among 15- to -24-year-olds increased by 110% between '21 & '22, exposing ~25MM young people to #tobaccoimagery. #Tobaccoimagery in top #binge-watched shows nearly quadrupled, and doubled in music videos for the most popular songs. Even #Oscar-nominated movies mostly depicted #smoking, well maybe except for Barbie. Whether it’s right or wrong to use tobacco imagery in the creation of a character is not for me to judge, but I would be curious to find a study that documented the impact on tobacco usage in the years to follow. And food for thought for the governments trying to curb out smoking: perhaps there is a need to re-evaluate and develop a more comprehensive legislation plan and campaign strategies that target all points of influence and address all types of smoking and vaping. https://lnkd.in/gWeayGAd #tobaccoimagery #health #smokingban #antismoking #culture

Tubi TV: Exploiting Black Entertainers While Fox News Undermines Black Voters... Tubi, a free streaming service owned by Fox Corporation, has been actively promoting and featuring Black content, including original movies and shows with predominantly Black casts. This strategy has helped Tubi attract a significant Black audience and drive its rapid growth. However, there are concerns that this approach may ultimately benefit Fox News and its parent company's conservative agenda, which has been criticized for suppressing and denigrating the Black vote.
