A new study has shown that only 5% of new therapies passing animal trials were successfully approved for human consumption. The researchers looked at 367 therapeutic interventions and found that only 14 passed human clinical trials. Why? The scientists conclude that animal studies are often poorly designed, invalidating their results. They also point to "notable discrepancies in the contexts of animal testing versus human application" which can lead to less relevant results. Complement Animal Research In Experimentation Here are the NIH “Complement-ARIE Challenge” Prize Winners! Congratulations! The National Institutes of Health has announced the winners of the Common Fund Complement Animal Research In Experimentation (Complement-ARIE) crowdsourcing competition for innovative ideas on New Approach Methodologies, or NAMs. The Complement-ARIE Challenge prize competition offered $1,000,000 in total prize money to diverse teams with ideas for new ways of using NAMs to conduct basic research, uncover disease mechanisms, and translate knowledge into products and practice. https://lnkd.in/dP3h2CtE

At Animal Free Research UK, our scientists and laboratories push the latest animal free technological and research boundaries with cutting-edge technologies which are best placed to discover treatments for human diseases and save precious time and lives. Each project we fund is a step along the road to completely replacing animals in medical research. Today, April 24th, is the world day for Laboratory animals. This day was instituted in 1979 to draw attention to animal research. At the Swedish 3Rs Center we work to replace, reduce and refine animal research. 500 research institutions reach out to society to explain why and how they use animals in research. Scientists showing responsibility towards society are struggling every day to perform life saving research against activists who driven by their ideology claim that animals can be replaced right here and now. National Transparency Agreements has been signed by 500 biomedical institutions in Europe, creating a network of organizations dedicated to the same objective: more openness and transparency about animal research. Proactively talking about animal research to the general public... ...biomedical organisations do that more and more often now. Partially because they are taking that challenge in a team, they are no longer alone in doing so. 500 biomedical institutions in Europe have signed a National Transparency Agreement, thus forming a network of institutions that commit to the same goal: being more open about animal research. These institutions have improved the information on their website, talk more openly with the media, invite the media, politicians or other groups to their facilities, host Q&A's on social media. And they share their experience with each other. As a group, they grow and learn much faster than each individual organisation ever could.
