This article in Health Affairs by Arthur Lodge Kellermann is a great read about the current state of the U.S. Military Health System. It highlights the challenges faced by this system and the critical importance of addressing them promptly. For me, Exhibit 1 of the article that looks at DOD healthcare spending compared to US healthcare and VA healthcare spending is eye-opening. Kellerman stresses that failure to act swiftly could have severe consequences for military readiness and the well-being of service members and their families. To ensure a robust and effective military health system, immediate action is required. #militaryhealth #HealthcareReform #nationalsecurity #militarymedicine #army https://lnkd.in/emZwTxya

Although Arthur Lodge Kellermann ‘s article was published last year, you won’t find a more succinct statement of how military medicine got to where it is today. Unfortunately, what took a decade to disassemble won’t be fixed anytime soon - the pipeline back to a healthy MHS is a long one, frought with outdated processes, unnecessarily onerous policies, and massive turnover. That being said, there are dynamic leaders in place at every level of the services and DHA! The MHS is not irreparably broken. As service members, we pride ourselves on critical thinking, flexibility and adaptability - these skills can’t just apply to the battlefield - MHS leaders must be given the opportunity and lattitude to apply these skills to innovate, update, and renovate the system. Dr. Kellerman’s recommendations are a good start!

Military Recruiting 101 (medical standards) Did you know your military processing station liason can provide you with a medical guide that highlights common diagnosis and conditions and the criteria surgeon generals and chief medical officers are looking for? This can really help with your medical submissions because you know exactly what they are looking for to make the decision of medically fit. Example, childhood asthma…asthma after 13 is not “disqualifying”, it is more scrutinized because they are looking for asthma conditions with the last 5 years (due to many joint at 18…back that up 5 years and you get 13). Florida Exception: In Florida, physicians working for the federal government or the Department of Defense (DoD) are typically exempt from state medical licensing requirements. This exception allows these medical professionals to practice without needing a state license, as long as they are working within the scope of their federal employment. This regulatory exception is part of a broader effort to streamline the process for healthcare professionals working in federal institutions or for the military, ensuring they can provide care without the added burden of state-specific licensure processes. The Florida Department of Health outlines various licensing and regulatory procedures but recognizes the federal exemption for those employed by the government or the DoD (Florida Health) (Florida Board of Medicine) (Florida Board of Medicine).

VA (Big Govt) serves itself first - ALWAYS #VETERANS know they are merely subjects of PITY Fear Policy (Big Govt) can’t even deliver PITY. Big Government is not the answer! #RespectNotPity Be #TheEagle instead!
🛑 Why so many Veterans meet their end in VA parking lots 🛑 Today, the VA canceled my appointment with 28 hours' notice, an appointment that took me months to work up the courage to make. This launched me into a bureaucratic nightmare. What followed was a maddening loop of transfers—from a nurse advice line (who couldn't make me an appointment anywhere else because of policy) to eligibility offices(who couldn't make the doctor change because of policy), and finally bounced between clinics without any resolution. This chaos is why we hear heartbreaking stories of veterans committing suicide in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs parking lots. It's unacceptable. Our veterans deserve dignity and respect, not endless red tape and incompetence. We need a complete overhaul of the VA system—now. Our heroes can't wait. Tanya Bradsher, Shereef Elnahal, Kimberly J., Steven Lieberman, Michael Missal is this the legacy you all want to leave behind when you stop SERVING the Veterans who utilize the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs? #VeteransAffairs #VAHealthcare #SystemFail #DemandChange
