Veteran Housing Corp says that IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF A PERMANENT AND LASTING SOLUTION TO THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS AND HOMELESSNESS, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM! THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS BROKEN AND NOT WORKING FOR AMERICAN TAXPAYERS Veteran Housing Corp would ask every TAXPAYER to demand and get answers from their elected and appointed government officials the below questions as they relate to any affordable, workforce, or supportive housing project in your community! 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, or other government benefits or incentives did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? Is the affordability period permanent and in perpetuity? 3. What guarantees exist have your local, state, and federal government officials obtained in writing that rents will not go up or that tenants will not be displaced or evicted after the "affordability period expires? Every local, state, and federal housing authority and affordable or workforce housing stakeholder should adopt the State of Vermont's "permanent affordability" policy as a model for all future government funded or subsidized housing projects or developments, no exceptions! https://lnkd.in/eFEUC8c8 Additionally, local, state and federal housing agencies should look to the Helsinki, FINLAND MODEL of ending homelessness by providing affordable housing for all 'It’s a miracle': Helsinki's radical solution to homelessness https://lnkd.in/er9HZSQU Even the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development AGREES THAT adopting FINLAND'S MODEL OF ERADICATING HOMELESSNESS may be of great value to resolving the affordable housing and homelessness crises in America https://lnkd.in/gkSZWYRU

💡 Most of us have heard of “college undermatching”, a phenomenon in which highly-qualified students don’t apply to or attend selective postsecondary institutions for which they are academically qualified, but have you heard of “career undermatching”? It’s when students have earned degrees and pursue jobs that don’t require that particular degree. 🕵️ There are undoubtedly a variety of reasons why recent college graduates would choose a job for which they are overqualified. As secondary school counselors and advisors, we can ensure that students are aware of the variety of postsecondary credentialing that exists as a way to help them determine the type of credentialing that is required for the job or career they hope or expect to achieve.

Career services can only provide so much support and guidance. Faculty MUST step up to incorporate career/employment preparation into the curriculum.
>30 years experience at >10 universities. My values - Grace for others (love in action), Humility (continual learning), Gratitude (joy for life), & Hope (leads to perseverance). Let's live each day like it is our last!
Sad to see that, on average, 3 in 10 college students say no faculty member has helped them explore a future career. https://lnkd.in/gFXaXHAq

I have a big article I am working on that discusses this topic in detail, but I will say, yes, I agree there is a big, big problem. One problem is "gatekeeping" people out of elite programs. I am in favor of both free education and unlimited lifetime learning. Doing what your told, i.e. doing what the admissions officer (who themselves perhaps is a legacy admit?) or your professor wants is overrated. Disobedience is something I try to teach, and unfortunately it is hard to get students to do it at the elite level :) https://lnkd.in/eMbE-sfa

I have a lot of thoughts about receiving an email that ended with a threat from a student. First and foremost, it saddens me when public or private discourse is threat-based, and I have seen this more and more, recently. Like statements of bias, threats, at a minimum, create new forms of invisible labor and add stress to my job. Second, although this particular engagement wasn't about grading, the tone of the email makes me reflect on how so many of our engagements with students reflect the inherent power structure of academia -- when we grade, we literally assign values to students' work that impact their reputation, and as a former student I know this does not always feel fair and equitable (though that is not the same as a threat!). Last, I want to acknowledge and thank those who are speaking out about threats to faculty including the AAUP (https://lnkd.in/gS4gmrzm) and a recent Inside Higher Ed article (https://lnkd.in/gtdwVYMi). While this email does not rise to the worst levels of threat reported in those articles, having read them was incredibly helpful in my processing of this experience.
