Another full-circle moment! Last week, I had the privilege of accompanying our latest cohort of students to Christ Church, Oxford, supporting them as they explore university admissions and higher education opportunities. Reflecting on nearly 3.5 years at Thinking Black, I'm overwhelmed by the impact we've made. From trips to publishing agencies to student publications, celebration days, and creating decolonised essay content on identity, community, and heritage - all centered on Black scholarship. It all began with a chance encounter that led me to the ACT essay prize, where I wrote my first academic piece for the 'Our Time is Now' module: "Why didn't the Tottenham riots turn into a revolution?" That moment was truly transformative. It gave me the skills and confidence to professionally articulate my thoughts and feelings while embracing my own experiences - I still vividly remember where I was and how I felt during those riots. As I prepare to take a brief hiatus from Thinking Black to pursue my master's degree, I'm filled with both sadness and excitement. Sad to step back from this life-changing organisation, but thrilled to watch it grow, develop, and adapt to support even more students. To all young Black individuals out there: please get involved with Thinking Black in any way you can - participate, work with us, or simply keep an eye on our progress. The future is bright, and I can't wait to see where we go from here! #ThinkingBlack #HigherEducation #BlackScholarship #FullCircleMoment

Fascinating insights in this new blog post from Hannes Read at City-REDI, University of Birmingham, on the transformative power of PhD study - not just for the individual, but for communities, businesses and society as a whole. The post unpacks how PhD programs can drive the civic mission of universities by: - Directing research to address important local challenges - Embedding doctoral training to support regional economic needs - Linking PhD work with key business sectors to maximise impact - Harnessing the economic and social benefits of PhDs As universities look to strengthen their civic engagement, reimagining PhD programs provides a major opportunity. But it will require a strategic focus on aligning research with the needs of people and places. National Civic Impact Accelerator
Towards a Civic University: Unpacking the Role of PhD Study in Personal Development, Professional Practice, and the World We Live In In our latest blog, Hannes Read draws on the evidence review from the Review of the Economic and Social Value Produced through Funding PhD Students report as part of the National Civic Impact Accelerator. https://lnkd.in/ezqkBRmz

2023 brought more inspiration, clarity, and exhaustion than I've experienced in a long, long time... maybe ever. I gathered a few of my thoughts in our annual Founder's Note: "Ten years ago, my classmates and I decided to continue working on a class project after graduation. It was called 'Brain Busters' (a regrettable name that was naturally already taken by a wrestling duo). It was an interactive game to help people learn about neuroscience and society. It was also one of the earliest iterations of The Plenary, Co. model. We’ve embraced several evolutions since then. We’ve facilitated workshops, led free science communication trainings across campuses, developed undergraduate courses and multidisciplinary frameworks, curated artworks, designed curriculum, and even did a brief stint as social platform developers. Some of these experiments were successes and others were... not. But regardless of the outcome, each was an exploration of what could be. They were our attempts to answer the question: if we used what we collectively know about how people stay open, connected, and inspired around ideas, what kind of system would we build? In 2023, we used every learning and insight from the past decade to sculpt a series of experiences that challenge today’s norms for how communities explore ideas, who should be at the center of the conversation, and what it looks like to intricately braid curiosity and creativity together in pursuit of wellbeing for people and the planet. These were our biggest experiments yet. And after ten years of testing and iterating, we’re proud to finally have our answer to that question. Now it’s time to build it." I can't wait for this next phase, and I'm so immensely grateful for all of the stubbornly hopeful and imaginative people who have walked with us this far. Don't forget to rest, yall. We've got a lot of work to do.
We may be a quarter of the way through 2024, but we're still glowing from everything our team learned, built, and experienced in 2023. Our Annual Report is now live! A few highlights: 🌱 We hosted thousands of participants at an interactive art show on civically-critical scientific ideas in downtown San Francisco, featuring inspirational illustrators like Islenia Mil and Aashti Miller. 🌱 We partnered with brilliant independent makers like CASITA MICHI to craft multisensory experiences and answer age-old questions, like what does imagination ✨smell✨ like? 🌱 We hit a major milestone of reaching over one million students through our I Am a Scientist program, which aims to uplift students of all backgrounds and identities in worldshaping STEM fields. 🌱 And we signed a lease to open up our first ever physical space, coming to San Francisco's Pier 70 neighborhood later this year! As always, our deepest gratitude goes to the funders, partners, creative collaborators, and members of our communities who share our commitment to building a more informed, equitable, and sustainable world. We can't wait to keep dreaming up new pathways to what's possible together. Check out the full report below and here: https://shorturl.at/oUY14

Did you know that according to a 2020 University of Idaho news article, "the science and technology sectors in Idaho have boomed over the past decade. Today, 25% of Idaho's revenue and 70% of exports are from those industries and the number of high-tech jobs in Idaho has increased by 61%. Yet, Idaho-based companies are having trouble filling open positions with the local workforce." Investing in STEM and making a donation to Idaho STEM Action Center Foundation you will: Empower Students: Spark curiosity and engagement through interactive learning experiences, like the International Science & Engineering Fair. Equip Educators: Offer professional development opportunities to enhance STEM teaching skills. Bridge the Gap: Ensure equitable access to quality STEM education for all Idaho students, especially those in rural and underserved communities. Donate now: https://lnkd.in/gBmEV-uy

BFX took away some valuable learnings from the Thriving in Vertical Schools Research Forum: - breakout spaces are essential for student wellbeing and thriving. Students often referred to these spaces as ‘reset’ or ‘retreat’ spaces - students identified the distractions of noisy learning environments on teaching and learning. Listening and engaging with the students has been incredibly enlightening, and we’re using this valuable research data to create environments where students can truly flourish. https://lnkd.in/gMkieBgc
Last week, C4IE hosted the Thriving in Vertical Schools Research Forum, and we're excited to share the video recording of the event. A big thank you to all our participants, both in-person and online, for making the forum such a success. We also extend our gratitude to the speakers, partner schools, and event organisers for their contributions. We're thrilled to showcase how vertical schools are reshaping education in Australia.
