He participated in the development of both the Arpanet protocols and the initial organizational structure of the protocol development process. The multi-layer protocol architecture and the IETF evolved from this early work. The Request for Comments (RFCs) were intended as a temporary way to share technical details. That series is now 55 years old, exceeding the original expectation of six months to a year. The true paradigm shift was not just technical, though. Like Obi-Wan giving Luke a lightsaber, we were given control of the internet and thus able to expand our potential beyond what could be imagined before. In just the past few months, major rules from CMS, ACL, and HHS have all put high priority on making public services more accessible to people regardless of gender, disability, age, or economic status. This makes information and referral even more important. I look forward to hear how 2-1-1s, aging and disability resource centers (ADRCs) and other referral partners are evolving to meet the growing challenge!
