Study Reveals Weathering History of Western Pacific Island Arc Over the Past 140,000 Years - Chinese Academy of Sciences: According to a study published in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science on Apr. 18, researchers from China, South Korea, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States have reconstructed the weathering history of the Western Pacific island arc over the past 140,000 years, combined with the simulation results from transient climate models, and revealed the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of deep convection-precipitation evolution in the warm pool. https://lnkd.in/gfpCY6Ut

The year-long #MOSAiC expedition to the #Arctic Ocean, coordinated by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research and CIRES/NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, was my first field-going experience as a modeller. During the expedition, a network of autonomous ice-tethered systems (the "Distributed Network", DN) was deployed that aimed to bridge gaps in our understanding of temporal and spatial scales. In particular, sub-grid variability present in areas representative for typically-sized grid boxes of current #Earth system models was sampled. The close link between the expedition setup and current modelling strategies I find as exciting as ever. A couple of days ago our paper on the DN network was finally published in Elementa/University of California Press : 🌐 https://lnkd.in/eN9ziSnh With grid-box sizes well below 10 km (e.g., 4.4 km), the nextGEMS | next Generation Earth Modelling Systems and the Climate Adaptation Digital Twins in #DestinE I am working on at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts now resolve linear kinematic features in the sea ice cover (https://lnkd.in/eATAZApz) and the scale of the DN with tens to hundreds of points.

Today, the United States completed a 20-year project to define the limits of its extended continental shelf, the portion of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles which holds many resources and vital habitats for marine life. The U.S. extended continental shelf spans seven coastal regions and nearly one million square kilometers. 14 agencies worked to collect and analyze data that describe the depth, shape, and geophysical characteristics of the seabed and sub-sea floor. Defining the U.S. ECS allows the United States to conserve and manage its resources and enhance our knowledge of the marine environment in these important areas.
