Recognizing the signs of such manipulation is crucial for fostering resilience and advocating for change. Here’s how to identify when a government is instilling learned helplessness in its citizenry: 1. Erosion of Civil Liberties A primary indicator is the systematic erosion of civil liberties. When governments enact laws or policies that curtail freedom of speech, assembly, and the press, they aim to stifle dissent and control public discourse. Citizens may feel that voicing their opinions or protesting against injustices is dangerous or pointless. 2. Widespread Corruption and Impunity When corruption becomes rampant and public officials act with impunity, it creates a sense of futility among the populace.
