Front End Engineering Design (FEED) is a pivotal phase in power distribution projects, serving as the link between project conception and execution. In this stage, several key elements are addressed: Project Definition: The project's scope, objectives, and requirements are clearly defined, specifying capacity, voltage levels, and coverage. Site Assessment: Detailed surveys gather data on terrain, existing infrastructure, environmental factors, and regulatory demands, shaping the design process. Technical Design: Engineers develop the distribution system's layout, including substations, transformers, switchgear, and lines, optimizing efficiency. Load Analysis: Comprehensive load analysis predicts demand, guiding equipment sizing based on growth and historical data. Safety and Environment: Safety standards and environmental regulations are integrated into the design, addressing equipment placement, clearances, and environmental impacts. Cost Estimation: Detailed cost estimates encompass capital, operating costs, and contingencies, aiding in budgeting and financing. Risk Assessment: Identifying potential challenges and uncertainties allows for the development of mitigation strategies. Regulatory Compliance: The project complies with permits, codes, and regulations, necessitating coordination with authorities for approvals. Schedule Development: A realistic project schedule is devised, defining milestones and timelines. Stakeholder Engagement: Engagement with communities, utilities, and government agencies addresses concerns and secures support. Technology Selection: The most suitable technologies and equipment are chosen, prioritizing reliability, efficiency, and compatibility. Feasibility Study: A feasibility study assesses project viability, factoring in technical, economic, and environmental considerations. FEED serves as the blueprint for subsequent phases, guiding detailed engineering and construction. It ensures the efficient, safe, and compliant implementation of power distribution systems, aligning with stakeholder needs and regulatory requirements.

Introducing design tools to younger engineers is an exciting endeavour that can ignite their creativity and enhance their problem-solving skills. Starting today I intend to post regular electrical topics from the experience I have gained in several sectors of engineering from my career of some 38 years. When starting a project, the first electrical calculations that is most useful is possibly the load schedule. There are many free templates available on the web and many of them are in excel format. Excel is a good starting point since templates can be easily configured and tailored to suit your needs. The electrical load schedule is very important at the project beginning since it will assist in determining the size and quantities of the major electrical plant such as switchgear, transformers, cableways etc. More often than not, major electrical equipment is likely to count, in percentage terms the highest project costs. Furthermore, switchgear, transformers and generators will require spatial planning that needs to be considered very early in the project design process. Next time I will discuss the load schedule in more detail.
