🔍 The Importance of Patient Positioning Devices in the Operating Theatre 🔍 In the operating theatre, proper patient positioning is vital for both safety and surgical success. Devices from Trulife, D. A. Surgical, Ergotrics and Natus Products, and others are essential for preventing pressure injuries and maintaining patient stability during procedures. Pressure injuries are a significant concern, with an estimated annual treatment cost in Australia ranging from $983 million to $2.3 billion AUD. With the average cost per injury reaching up to $168,000 AUD𝟙, investing in proper positioning tools is both a health and economic imperative. Ensuring stable and safe patient positioning not only helps prevent these costly injuries but also supports better surgical outcomes. Can ground-based 911 paramedics perform surgical airway placement accurately without physician assistance? At Montgomery County Hospital District EMS in Greater Houston, paramedics successfully placed emergent surgical airways >90% of the time over a 10-year period without online medical direction or physician assistance on the scene. Paramedic initiation of the procedure permitted rapid action in the specific time-sensitive situation where oxygenation and ventilation were impossible using less invasive means. This protocol's initiation, maintenance, and success required consistent, thorough oversight, education, and continuous training. While rarely indicated (only 31 cases over the study period), a surgical airway can be lifesaving, and this study demonstrates excellent paramedic accuracy in performing the procedure. Am I the only one feeling this? Working as an emergency physician, I feel that we aren’t recognised a lot in public. Patients come to us with their profound complaints like severe pain, chest discomfort, weakness in the limbs, I can go on but yeah, we stabilise them and make sure they are comfortable and refer them to the specific specialist and they move out to icu or rooms or sometimes they go home. The specialist whom we are referring gets the credit and all the recognition whereas emergency physicians get nothing but a priceless satisfaction when we resuscitate a patient. Even after we resuscitate the cardiologist or the thoracic surgeon or whomsoever it is gets the credit if the patient recovers and gets discharges. We might present with research papers, be very good at our skills like intubations, lines and the way we think to rule out the diagnosis in a very quick span..woah that’s great really great, not just one patient at a time but many sometimes but all these efforts go in vain. #emergencymedicine
