🔧 Application Success Story: Optimizing Asphalt Residue Flow at a Major Refinery🔧 A major refinery needed precise mass flow measurement of asphalt residue— a very heavy fuel oil— to their cracking oven. The challenge? Managing high-temperature fluids (320°C) while ensuring the asphalt didn’t solidify inside the tubes, which would make cleaning nearly impossible. 💡 Solution: Yokogawa installed two heat-traced ROTAMASS TI units—one on the storage tank outlet line and another on the recirculation. By comparing the two flow rates, the refinery accurately measured total oven consumption while maintaining fluid flow at high temperatures. 🚀Results: With ROTAMASS TI’s superior heat-tracing and insulation, the refinery achieved better performance and reliability. Today i will discuss about impact of reflux ratio in a distillation column. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐱 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧? The reflux ratio in a distillation column refers to the ratio of the amount of condensed vapor (reflux) returned to the column compared to the amount of vapor withdrawn as product. It is a critical parameter in distillation processes and directly impacts the separation efficiency and product purity. Reflux Ratio = LC / D LC = Condensed Liquid D = Distillate A higher reflux ratio means more of the condensed liquid is returned to the column, which increases the liquid holdup on the trays or packing and enhances the efficiency of separation by providing more contact between the liquid and vapor phases. This typically leads to higher product purity but also requires more energy input for reboiling the reflux. Conversely, a lower reflux ratio means less condensed liquid is returned to the column, resulting in lower liquid holdup and reduced separation efficiency. While this may save energy, it can also decrease product purity. The reflux ratio is often adjusted during the operation of a distillation column to optimize the separation performance based on factors such as desired product purity, energy consumption, and process constraints. It is one of the key parameters controlled by the distillation column operator to achieve the desired separation objectives. To increase the reflux ratio in a distillation column, you can: 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐱 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐞: This involves sending more of the condensed liquid (reflux) back to the column's top. This can be achieved by adjusting the reflux drum level control or increasing the cooling capacity of the condenser. 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐞:: By withdrawing less distillate from the top of the column, more liquid remains in the column to provide reflux. 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐩𝐮𝐭: Increasing the heat input to the reboiler can increase the amount of vapor generated in the column, which can increase the reflux ratio. 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐲 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: Improving the efficiency of the trays in the column can increase the separation efficiency, allowing for higher reflux ratios to be achieved. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Adjusting the control valve on the reflux stream or distillate stream can directly control the reflux ratio.
