This is a MP who understands #healthcare (HC). Hon. Mark Holland, PC, MP must take note. Further to the comments attached to this article, there is no distinction between "private healthcare" & "privately delivered" publicly funded healthcare. These are buzz words; a distinction w/o a difference; found in the recent Canadian Medical Association report. No blurring of lines. It is all about $. Challenging private care is not the "scaring of people". Such tactics belong to privatization lobbyists to scare people into believing that only they can "fix" it. Anything the private sector can do, the public sector can do better & at less cost. For-profit supporters do not want to put the blame at the gov'ts feet, because it is not in their best interest. The gov't is aiding & abetting the ruse. Reference to "successful European & Scandinavian models" is another deception. The Canadian model has to be deemed a failure to promote privatization. Any of the models looked at never compare apples with oranges. If there are such data, let's see them. Many other models show the opposite, & yes, bankruptcy is clearly one outcome when privatization takes hold. Dismissing the US model as an aberration & suggesting this could never happen in Canada is another hoax. HC privatization is a slippery slope & we are quickly reaching a point of no return, if the gov't does not step in. The idea that private care can increase capacity is nonsense. Public HC could increase capacity if the excess $ paid to private clinics were provided to the public system. Extending the number of surgeries a hospital could do is only one example. Also, pharmacies have found a gold mine in the virtual (no overhead) Medschek program, where de-skilled advocates get paid double what doctors get paid for in-office visits. This past year I have had 3 such calls. I agree with Catherine MacNeil that HC & social safety nets have an impact on each other. An inverse relationship. Promoters of private care do not want us to know that fees for public services paid by the province are at one level, but when such services are provided by private clinics, fees paid by the province are secret. Why is that? There is nothing altruistic about the privatization approach. It is self-serving. If it were altruistic, promoters would line up behind Mother Teresa and provide their services for free. No matter how you cut it, there will always be out-of-pocket fees, upselling, or inflated fees paid for by tax payer $. Privatization will always be more costly and less effective. "Global health advocates call on the World Health Organization to explicitly champion the goal of universal access to reliable healthcare information." Last year we conducted a global consultation for WHO to assess stakeholder perspectives on universal access to reliable healthcare information and how to accelerate progress. Respondents overwhelmingly called for WHO to explicitly champion the goal of universal access to reliable healthcare information, and for WHO and HIFA to convene stakeholders to develop a global strategy to accelerate progress.
