🙋🏼♀️ Let's keep the conversation going : 🚩 Do you think pilots should be able to receive mental health care without reporting to FAA/CAA ? 🚩 Personally, I believe pilots should have access to mental health/well-being support without reporting. However, the specialists should be adequately qualified/informed and able to report to airlines/operators if safety is at risk - not to make your life difficult but to objectively assess - if you are not able to. Waiting until situations reach a crisis point shouldn't be our only recourse. Current protocols shouldn't deter us from seeking support, guidance, and help as early as possible and maintaining the right level of well-being. That is why if you go and seek support choose the specialist who understands your role, your responsibilities, as well as your work environment. 🙏
The repercussions of lying to the FAA are significant. The stresses of being a pilot—away from family and working an inconsistent schedule—can be strenuous. This raises the question: Do you think pilots should be able to receive mental health care without reporting it to the FAA? Comment your thoughts below. #aviationdaily #aviation #pilotlife #mentalhealthmatters #pilotlicense #FAA

An Extremely interesting article on mental health in aviation, to remind us that behind the uniform there is always a story that no one knows. Alan Hauser, a student in the Usa at the University of North Dakota John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, before committing suicide in his Piper on October 18, 2021, wrote to his parents: "I want to seek help more than anything. If I try, I will have to give up aviation [...] If there's anything you can do for me, get the FAA to change the rules on pilots seeking help for their mental health. I know it would change a lot of things for the better and help a lot of people." No one knew that John had a history of depression and mental health problems. Troy Merritt, a first officer for United Airlines, a year earlier had decided to ground himself and seek treatment for depression and anxiety: "Taking an antidepressant can be very difficult: months and years without job, waiting for the certification process, and the possibility of never being able to fly again [...] If the barriers in place today had not been there, I know I would have sought treatment earlier." Laila Stein, a recent graduate of Western Michigan University's College of Aviation, CFI at Jeff Air Pilot Services, devoted her thesis to aviation students' perceptions of the FAA's rules on 'getting health help' by finding how negatively it affects their desire to seek professional care. Homendy, president of the NTSB, says the stigma around mental wellness is real: "no one should have to think twice about their job before seeking help." The safety risk comes from a culture of silence about mental health. In contrast, a culture that empowers people to get the care they deserve to be healthy in mind and body will strengthen safety." Quay Snyder, president and CEO of Virtual Flight Surgeons, says that exacerbating this is the lack of aviation-savvy mental health professionals. There is a need to find and encourage a more to go into that discipline. #mentalhealth #aviationpsychology #mentalwellbeing https://lnkd.in/dmCMpzdR
