A new paper from my laboratory in Eurosurveillance: Diana I. Palme; Juliane Lang; Dajana Helke; Maryna Kuryshko, Elsayed M. Abdelwhab Strain-dependent variations in replication of European clade 2.3.4.4b influenza A(H5N1) viruses in bovine cells and thermal inactivation in semi-skimmed or whole milk Effect of fat content on thermal inactivation of European H5N1 flu: - At 56°C/30 min, some retained infectivity, especially in whole milk - Complete inactivation at 75°C/30 min or 56°C/120 min - Heat whole milk properly We showed strain-specific replication efficacy of European H5N1 viruses from Germany in bovine kidney and lung cells. the work is funded by @KappaFlu #ERANET # FLU-Switch; Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut

Risk assessment is hard and context is important, especially when so much information is siloed. Several recent virology papers have described how the H5N1 influenza virus is able to infect human conjunctivia and cattle mammary glands because of the alpha2,3 receptors. Concern about human to human spread is somewhat muted because the receptors in the upper airways for humans are predominantly alpha2,6. The human nasolacrimal duct contains a mix of the receptors and lies inbetween the eyes and respiratory tract. (The picture below is from Belser et al., 2013).

Understanding Viral Diversity from the study by Prof. Fabrício Souza Campos et al at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul: 🦟🦠 New viruses and potential new genera highlight the need to study sylvatic #mosquito viromes for better understanding of viral evolution and diversity. 📍 Presence of insect-specific viruses (ISVs) and potential novel arboviruses indicate the importance of ongoing surveillance and control strategies to prevent emerging infectious diseases. https://lnkd.in/gVbvUF5S #Virology #PublicHealth #Arbovirus #MosquitoResearch #Biodiversity
