The ACHE's end-2023 hospital CEO survey put "workforce challenges (e.g., personnel shortages)" at the top of the list (again). Underneath that- 86% marked "RN shortages" and 79% marked burnout among non-MD staff as top priorities All these tie together, but reminder that the shortage is NOT just patient demand > RN supply- it's mounting dissatisfaction among RNs at the bedside, turning to agency and other alternative employers as a result Hospitals still are the employer of choice for most RNs- back in 2019, I had a high-performing employee leave us after finishing her degree, with a clear rationale: "Hospital nursing is why I just got my RN, and it's what I want to do next" BUT this status as "employer of choice" is fading, driven by old systems and processes. We can mandate anything at the state and federal level - including new #staffing regulations and higher staffing minimums. But without commensurate funding and #workforcedevelopment solutions, those mandates will ultimately mean nothing for improving patient care. With an impending federal #nursinghome staffing mandate, a potential state #hospital staffing mandate, and new staffing regulations for PA nursing homes, the question must be considered: where will we find these new workers? And how will we afford to meet their wages? The Pennsylvania Health Care Association shared these concerns as staffing proposals loom in Harrisburg and Washington, DC. We’ve been proud to work with our partners in government to boost quality care - but is this sustainable?
