I have recently published a research paper that introduces a novel algorithmic approach to finding fair and efficient staff schedules. Workforce scheduling can be quite complex, especially in the healthcare sector where staff need to be present around the clock such as in the ER or the ICU. The challenge resides in finding a feasible schedule given a set of constraints and a certain objective (e.g. maximizing efficiency, minimizing overtime shifts, etc.) In the published paper, I developed an algorithmic approach that considers both efficiency and fairness, which are crucial for the decision-maker and the staff. In the figure below, note that the developed model 1 (A, D, and G) outperforms models 2 and 3 in terms of efficiency and fairness in resources (staff) and total loads (shifts).
