Why isn't volunteering more common in daily life? 🤔 Seamless.AI is organizing its fall philanthropy day next month, encouraging us to take a half day to volunteer for a charity in our area. I seized the opportunity and quickly signed up to dedicate a couple of hours of my time. Volunteering is something I value and would readily do given the chance. In school, volunteering was a regular part of our routine. However, as adults, this practice often fades away without external encouragement. While my mother has always been actively involved in charity work, I've noticed that many people only engage when prompted or when they have a personal connection. Let's work towards making volunteering and donating a common practice. It should be something we do regularly, perhaps on a monthly basis. There are countless ways to contribute - from organizing toy drives to baking for charity organizations or simply donating items to those in need. Did you know that 200,000 people are living with sight loss in London and just under 700,000 (1 in every 12 adults) are living with a sight threatening condition? That’s why we are working with Fight for Sight / Vision Foundation, to help them support their vision of a future where people living with sight loss are equal citizens and preventable blindness is a thing of the past. We awarded a grant to the organisation to deliver an online event for blind and partially sighted people between 16 and 25, highlighting the importance of maintaining mental fitness. The event served as a prequel to a set of four in-person activity days organised in partnership with Jamie’s Farm. Each activity day offered 10 young people the chance to spend a day outdoors in nature, working with animals and participating in challenges and activities that allowed them to explore themselves and their well-being journeys. “It was great to be given tasks that you don’t normally do and be given the opportunity to complete them independently. I particularly enjoyed interacting with the animals and chopping firewood.” – Sam, Event Participant IICF recognises that the UK has one of the poorest rates of social mobility in the developed world. 🚩 Examples of facilitating volunteering and fundraising with young people Volunteering Matters runs a number of projects that engage young people in social action. They help facilitate and amplify the voices and actions of younger people to be more involved for positive change in their local communities. They have 6 dedicated projects, The Team London Young Ambassador Project has helped 600 young people across 61 settings to design and deliver social action projects of importance to them and to improve their community. They were also involved in delivering training and workshops for other young people and the team at Volunteering Matters. Other projects help young people engage and raise awareness of key issues such as mental health to help others in their communities and schools. #youthleadership #trustee #charity
