Perinatal nurses and nurse leaders, supporting your nervous system is crucial when transitioning to a trauma-informed standard of care. As we embrace flexibility in our practices, our nervous system may send false alarms. Listening to our patients’ needs expands our approach beyond “the way it’s always been done.” In addition, approaching our teams with curiosity and compassion can feel like we’re navigating without a compass - a bit unfamiliar at times. This shift fosters trust and connection but can strain our nerves. Prioritizing nervous system support ensures a sense of safety amidst change, novelty, and uncertainty. Perhaps try some simple neuro drills that you know you respond well to at regular intervals throughout the day.
