🏅 Paris 2024: A Real Green Olympics? The Paris 2024 Olympics promised to cut carbon emissions by 50% compared to past Games like London and Rio. They got creative: 95% of events were held in existing or temporary venues, and 2,800 Olympic Village apartments will be reused, with a third earmarked for public housing. Renewable energy powered most of the venues, including a solar farm on the Seine. But challenges remain. Air travel emissions still account for 25% of the total, and not all sustainable initiatives hit the mark, such as Coca-Cola's struggle with plastic reduction. The result? A mix of progress and hurdles reminding us that true sustainability requires more than just bold promises—it's about balancing ambition with practical execution.

🌿Sustainability Generalist | Freelancing to help organisations achieve sustainability 🐢 | Award-winning Sustainability Workshopper
📣 The Paris Olympics are making waves for their sustainability efforts - plant-based menus, recycled materials, green energy etc. A green step forward, but is it enough? 🤔 It's definitely a step in the right direction. But here's the thing: Being the "greenest" Olympics doesn't mean it's sustainable. The Paris Olympics are still projected to pump out a whopping 1.75 million tonnes of CO2⚠️ While it's better than previous Olympics, it's still a LOT of emissions. Do not get me wrong, considering sustainability is a start, indeed, and I am so happy for that. But we need to aim for zero harm and push for even bolder and more regenerative solutions. 💭 What do you think? Can mega-events like the Olympics ever be truly sustainable? #parisolympics #olympics2024 #sustainability

Here are three concrete examples of sustainable practices implemented by the Olympics: ♻️Sustainable Venues: Many Olympic venues were built using eco-friendly materials, reducing the overall carbon footprint. Recycled and renewable resources were integral to the construction process. 🦖Zero-Waste Initiatives: The Games adopted zero-waste policies, including extensive recycling programs and the elimination of single-use plastics. These measures significantly reduced waste generation throughout the event. 🌳Carbon Offset Programs: To counterbalance emissions from activities like travel and construction, the Olympics invested in carbon offset projects. 🌳 Driving ESG & Decarbonisation Strategies | Empowering Companies to Achieve Sustainable Carbon Reduction 🎯
As we watch the #Paris2024 #Olympics and praise its green initiatives and #emission reduction goals, it's important to recognize the full scope of sustainability. True sustainability goes beyond #environmental efforts to include #social and #governance factors. Sadly, some have been neglected in the lead-up to the Games. Underneath the surface, there have been significant issues. Policies of social exclusion and urban cleansing have led to evictions, displacements, and soaring housing costs. Thousands of people, including migrants, university students, and vulnerable populations, have been pushed out to create a favorable image for the cameras. The city has seen the forced removal of thousands of homeless individuals from the streets, tents, and occupied buildings. Students have been evicted from their residences to accommodate Olympic workers who can pay higher rents. We must remember that #sustainabledevelopment is holistic. It should integrate social equity and fair governance. Before celebrating the Paris Olympics as a triumph of #sustainability, it’s crucial to address these overlooked aspects and strive for a future where sustainability means #equity and #inclusion for all.
