One of my favorite things about joining the team at Civil Engineering/Lyles School is learning about the amazing ways our civil engineers are using their training practically to help communities around the US and even outside - earthquake rebuilding in Turkey, water projects in Rwanda, hurricane planning in Louisiana, and more. Here’s one example of many.
Meet Andrew Whelton, whose expert guidance helps communities get back on their feet after wildfires strike. In this short film, learn why Whelton, a professor in Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue and Purdue University Environmental and Ecological Engineering, is driven to tackle the environmental and public health issues that citizens face in the aftermath of these devastating natural disasters.

Young, Gifted & Green, a national civil rights and environmental justice organization, strongly condemns the Supreme Court's ruling in the case of Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo [1]. This decision further empowers federal judges to strike down federal regulations that are essential for protecting the public. In a 6-3 ruling, the Court eliminated a longstanding legal principle known as Chevron deference. Chevron deference had previously required courts to defer to reasonable interpretations of ambiguous laws made by the federal agencies responsible for administering those laws. "This is a pivotal moment in the struggle for environmental justice. The SCOTUS' decision represents a grave threat to the health and wellbeing of marginalized communities nationwide. But we refuse to be discouraged. We know that the arc of history bends towards justice, and we will not rest until the courts recognize the EPA's rightful role as the defender of our air, our water, and our climate."--LaTricea D. A new milestone for electric vehicle charging in Illinois! Yesterday, EC Policy Associate Carolyn Bidó joined the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Governor Pritzker to celebrate the successful opening of the state’s first EV charging station funded by the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA). Passed in 2021 by the IL legislature, CEJA aims to promote cleaner, more affordable transportation. The event also promoted the State of Illinois’ efforts that have put the state on track to triple the number of public fast charging ports in the next two years.
