This video from NCTA is 20 minutes long, but it really does help to paint the picture of what it is like getting fiber to rural America. It certainly isn't easy and there is a good reason that it can be as expensive as it is to build. When you are a smaller infrastructure owner localized to only one area you don't get the opportunity to subsidize with more urban areas that have a lower cost to build.
