Too many transformations stop at the operating model and business model, but the real magic happens when the way we work transforms. That requires a vital, engaged, and skills growth-mindset based workforce. As I read this Becker’s article with prominent CEOs talking about their transformations, health systems must focus on transforming “how employees and clinicians work” in addition to the changes in the business model and the physical bricks and mortar moving to ambulatory/outpatient settings. Health systems will need to shift their focus on “workforce vitality” instead of band-aid surface level solutions addressing shortages and scheduling burden if they want to accelerate their transformation. #transformationalleadership #healthcaretransformation #digitaltransformation
"Sg2 forecasts hospital capacity will change in the next decade with outpatient surgical volumes expected to grow 18%, with outpatient total joints and spinal fusions increasing significantly. Health systems are also developing hospital at home programs with growth in mind." What else will be different about health systems 3 years from now? via Becker's Healthcare https://bit.ly/3NLIwGz

When demand for care is rising faster than capacity, every appointment counts. A sustainable model of care demands that practices understand trends and patterns in demand, and can quickly flex to accommodate them. Access to data can help PCN and triage teams to understand patient needs and allocate them to the most appropriate point of care – reducing avoidable appointments and maximising the use of clinical time. This helps patients receive timely and effective care, while freeing up teams to focus on both urgent and important matters. Our clinically-validated algorithm helps clinicians make fast, accurate decisions on the most appropriate care for every inquiry, closing the gaps in primary care. NPR's Marketplace profiles Terlingua (TX) EMS' efforts at improving community health in a rural community. The reporter also highlights the growing challenges for rural EMS agencies in an increasingly challenging economic and staffing environment. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐪𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: "In some rural parts of the U.S., where hospitals and doctors’ offices are in short supply, people often turn to calling 911 just for basic medical care. Experts say that’s a problem for patients and hospitals, but a growing model called community paramedicine aims to address it by having paramedics regularly check in on people before a health issue turns into an emergency." "A 2023 survey from a national paramedics trade group (NAEMT) counted more than 150 of these kinds of community paramedicine programs across the country. It’s a growing health care model championed by EMS agencies and hospitals at a time when some advocates say rural health care is facing a crisis." "“The economic model for EMS-based community paramedicine is very challenging.” said Matt Zavadsky, a longtime emergency medicine professional in Texas who now works for a national consulting firm for EMS operations (PWW|AG)." “So we’ve got EMTs and paramedics all over the country who are doing the right thing by trying to work with patients to prevent unnecessary emergency department visits, but yet they’re not eligible for reimbursement,” he said." READ THE ARTICLE! The CEO of the largest health insurance company in Massachusetts knows how to solve our primary care situation: completely ignore the reality and severity of the problem. From the corporate perspective, our healthcare system should not be about human beings, but about money. It's about telling people what they don't need and shouldn't have for their healthcare. BCBS devalues and disrespects caregivers across the healthcare continuum with this article. Even worse, they disrespect the consumers who keep paying BCBS increasing rates for insurance, to (not) pay for their healthcare. Afterall, BCBS says they don't need it, even if they pay for it. It's yet another reason why providers are leaving primary care and no one wants to go into the field. Why spend years of your life training to actually care for people, throw yourself into hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt paying for medical school, continue your education throughout your career, only to be told the profession isn't worth it or needed. For a health insurance company to make patients believe they don't need to be seen in person by a provider, (and they don't need better medications, diagnostics, or surgery), because it all costs too much, is exactly why our Nation's health is getting worse, yet the insurance companies couldn't be doing better. Thank you for your honesty BCBS. There won't be a doctor to see you now, but BCBS will take your call (or at least put you on hold with an automated recording. Who needs human representatives either, they cost too much). Or better yet, stop paying BCBS for your insurance and just search Google. You'll find all kinds of providers there, and it's free. #primarycare #privatepractice Barbra Rabson Guy Culpepper, MD
