For anyone second guessing their CPC certification due to lack of job placement, please do not be discouraged. 🤗 Medical Coders are strong willed people with warrior courage to conquer every challenge. I was asked is it better to be a medical biller vs medical coder. It is my opinion, BOTH … 🏆 Great billers make the BEST coders. Medical billers understand the payers guidelines; the do/don’t of each service. Medical billers and coders depend heavily on each other. Most medical billers start in the department of (benefit) verification and/or authorization. This is the beginning of knowing the payers aka the root of medical billing and coding. From the root, your knowledge expands to branches of understanding .. how to submit a claim, read explanation of benefits (EOB), posting payments, working account receivable (A/R); claim denials, appeals, corrections, etc It is beautiful to watch a medical biller bloom into a medical coder .. please see Tip 1. 🌸 Tip 1: select an area of interest such as * facility (hospital/surgical) * professional (family or internal) physician * diagnostics, lab, dental, home health, DME, etc. Once a specialty is selected, it is highly recommended to monitor the billing guidelines to elevate to your medical coding knowledge. In closing, remember how you conquered the CPC exam and now holding certification(s) … trust your skills becoming a medical biller who succeeded becoming the BEST medical coder. Good Luck to all !! 🦋

medical coder translates details from a patient’s medical documents, such as physician's notes, lab reports, procedures, and diagnoses into universal medical codes to maintain accurate medical records. Healthcare providers and insurance companies use these standardized codes for billing and record-keeping. This administrative role is an important one within the in-demand healthcare industry. Learn more about what a medical coder does and whether this career path is right for you. What is medical coding? Medical coding is the process of taking a patient’s health care information like medical procedures, diagnosis, necessary medical equipment, and medical services information from the physician's notes. A medical coder transforms this information into universal medical alphanumeric codes. There are three types of universally known medical alphanumeric codes: International Classification of Diseases (ICD): The World Health Organization (WHO) created this internationally used code. The classification system is largely used for the purpose of health recording and data collection, among other uses. These codes can classify symptoms, diseases, illnesses, and causes of death. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT): CPT codes identify medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures and services within the US. The American Medical Association (AMA) developed this system, which includes three categories: procedures and contemporary medical practices, clinical labs, and emerging technologies. Healthcare Common Procedure Coding (HCPCS): The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed this coding system to help with processing insurance claims for Medicare or other providers. Coders use them to note medical procedures, products, supplies, and services. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #snsdesignthinking

Pharma Graduate | Register Pharmacist |Medical Coder | Hello, and welcome to my LinkedIn profile! I am a passionate and motivated pharmaceutical graduate.
What is medical coding? Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The diagnoses and procedure codes are taken from medical record documentation, such as transcription of physician's notes, laboratory and radiologic results, etc. Medical coding professionals help ensure the codes are applied correctly during the medical billing process, which includes abstracting the information from documentation, assigning the appropriate codes, and creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers. Medical coding happens every time you see a healthcare provider. The healthcare provider reviews your complaint and medical history, makes an expert assessment of what’s wrong and how to treat you, and documents your visit. That documentation is not only the patient’s ongoing record, it’s how the healthcare provider gets paid. Medical coders translate documentation into standardized codes that tell payers the following: •Patient's diagnosis •Medical necessity for treatments, services, or supplies the patient received •Treatments, services, and supplies provided to the patient •Any unusual circumstances or medical condition that affected those treatments and services The main task of a medical coder is to review clinical statements and assign standard codes using CPT®, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II classification systems. Medical billers, on the other hand, process and follow up on claims sent to health insurance companies for reimbursement of services rendered by a healthcare provider. #Aapc #MedicalCoding #Orthopedics #HealthcareBilling #ICD10 #CPTCode #icd10 #cpt #medicalbilling #MedicalCoding #Orthopedics #HealthcareBilling #ICD10 #CPTCoding #HealthcareManagement #HealthcareAdministration #MedicalBilling #HealthcareIndustry #HealthcareProfessionals

Mastering the Maze: Navigating the Prior Authorization Process A medical service is not merely a physical act but a holistic journey that starts from identifying a patient’s need to providing the required treatment, and ensuring its coverage. I had been navigating the complexities of healthcare for over 30 years and have personally experienced various procedures, including five spinal fusions and complete hip and knee replacements. This gives me a unique perspective on the process – the bird’s eye view, so to speak. One crucial part of this journey is Prior Authorization (PA), where insurance coverage for a certain medical procedure has to be pre-approved. It is a necessary, yet often misunderstood gatekeeper. Its chief purpose is not to create roadblocks but to ensure optimal patient care while keeping costs manageable. Though it may appear tedious, securing a PA is not as daunting as it seems. Most denials stem from incomplete clinical documentation justifying the procedure. Essentially, you need a well-documented clinical storyline that paints a comprehensive picture of the patient’s condition, explaining why the chosen route is necessary and why alternatives were discarded. Sometimes, health plans require prerequisites like physical therapy for back pain before escalating to a surgical route. This is to avoid unnecessary surgical risk and financial burden. I can vouch for this process, having seen it work successfully for three family members. But approval does not guarantee payment. Here, precision is pivotal. Accurate ICD-10 and CPT codes corresponding to the patient’s diagnosis and procedure are required. Any discrepancy between approved and actual billed codes results in payment being denied. For instance, a single error in the level count during a spine fusion surgery can lead to rejection, as I personally experienced. However, the barriers can be overcome effectively. A few steps such as periodic chart audits by external agencies or hiring certified coders can be instrumental in minimizing these administrative glitches. Also, always remember, ‘No’ is not the final answer. Persistence pays! To achieve quicker and smoother Prior Authorization processing, augmenting your team with specialized remote support is an excellent choice.
