President, Leslin Healthcare Leadership Foundation Adjunct Professor, New York University NYAM Fellow
The Critical Role of Continuing Education in Healthcare Leadership In the healthcare field, for clinicians and non-clinicians alike, continuing education is essential for maintaining excellence and advancing professional practice. For healthcare leaders, staying updated about the latest policies, technology, practices, medical care, and research is crucial for delivering high-quality service and care and maintaining licensure and certification. Lifelong Learning Across Disciplines: Attending conferences, webinars, and training programs is essential for healthcare professionals, to stay current with knowledge and innovation. Integrating continuing education into the workplace will be even more important in the future. It also allows for cross-disciplinary networking and learning. Statutory and Voluntary Learning: In New York State, certain healthcare leadership positions, such as those in charge of nursing homes, require ongoing licensure and certification. To maintain a license, documentation of continuous professional development is needed, as stated in Public Health Law, Article 28-D, § 2896. Many other healthcare management and leadership positions encourage continuous learning but don't require it. To develop future leaders, we should consider policy enhancements and credentialing opportunities aligned with licensing and certification requirements. The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) advocates for lifelong learning at all career stages for staff to thrive in healthcare management. Leaders at every level need to actively contribute and create a new work environment using a distributive leadership model. Preparing and refreshing skills for a broader network of leaders will require total commitment to life-long learning. Practical Steps for Us as Leaders: - Share Learning Achievements: Demonstrate personal commitment to life-long learning by sharing certifications and knowledge with staff and in the field, illustrating an authentic dedication to lifelong learning. - Career Pathway Development: Commit to co-create career pathways that embed and support lifelong learning for staff, enabling personal and professional fulfillment. - Communities of Practice: Encourage and motivate employees to create forums to drive change, share knowledge, and contribute to a workplace culture focused on learning. "I am still learning," said Michelangelo at 87. This underlines the timeless truth that learning is a lifelong journey. This quotation has motivated me to refresh existing knowledge and keeping learning. Leslin is dedicated to fostering a culture of lifelong learning to cultivate resilient, high-performing leaders for the future. Should we align with licensing guidelines and require more leaders to commit to life-long learning?
