Reflections on Retirement I write this note on my final day in the office at Revera Inc where I have had the pleasure of leading an amazing team for the past almost 10 years. It is a surreal experience as I step back into an active retirement. As a serial CEO it is most unusual to contemplate an existence without the business structure or support but alas the fear of the unknown is usually worse than confronting the known.                 People have asked me what I am most proud of about my time at Revera. That’s easy - I am most proud of the culture we created together. A culture relentlessly focused on quality of life and respect for residents and team members. A culture in which people are safe to challenge norms, to consciously make and take accountability of decisions. When Revera was recognized as one of Canada’s Most Admired Cultures, in early 2020 right before the pandemic, it was a great moment that celebrated a years-long journey for everyone at Revera.   Through sometimes difficult decisions, our leadership team has consistently lived our values, always focused on respecting people. We did not always get everything right, but we were able to move forward and learn, which is what the journey is all about.   Over my career I have been fortunate to work with some amazing leaders whether at Revera; LifeLabs/CML Healthcare; Therapure or over my 20 years at Eli Lilly here in Canada, the US, the UK, in Germany or abroad. I am grateful.   What’s next for me? My immediate plans are to take a breath and to spend some quality time with my wife Mary as we think about and map out the next chapter together both personally and professionally. There are several areas of interest for learning and exploration. Although, I enjoy business, so I plan to engage in more advisory work; take on a few more Boards – most recently I was nominated by the province to serve on the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan Board and I have been on the Andlauer Health Group Board for the past four years. Mary and I also plan to travel to visit our daughter in the UK, who is starting her first veterinary practice, and to spend more time with our son, who we love seeing at home in Toronto and up at the lake.   I look forward to staying in touch, my contact details are:   thomas@wellcap.ca +1416-906-7719 https://lnkd.in/gw8uw7vZ   It will be a big change, but a wise man once told me you’re never too old to learn. Starting the next chapter Since 2005, I’ve been privileged to serve the innovative biopharmaceutical industry in many roles at PhRMA—an organization with the most passionate and most brilliant people I've ever met. While it is bittersweet to retire early when it feels so much of my work is unfinished and bittersweet to say goodbye to my team members past and present on Innovation Way, I’m looking forward to exploring new paths. When you look up the word retirement in the dictionary some of the synonyms are withdrawal, retreat, recession, pullout, pullback, disengagement, recoil, revulsion and some of the antonyms include advance and advancement. More people, particularly following the pandemic and those who are facing the shift to caregiving and other support of their parents, reconsidering work-life balance and what’s most important to them, and in many cases have decided they don’t need to keep moving up the corporate ladder, I think it’s past time to reconsider how we all think about retirement. As someone who is excited to have the privilege to retire early, it has been interesting how many friends and colleagues have approached this change as if it’s a funeral and I’ll never be seen or heard from again. Many are bewildered that someone who is so dedicated to ensuring a favorable policy environment for continued medical innovation and robust and secure biopharma manufacturing supply chains is going to walk away and has not developed the same detailed strategy and execution plans for retirement as I have for every issue that I’ve ever worked on during my 18+ years at PhRMA.  Many have said that the term should not be retirement but retirements as many will return to the workforce at different times following initial retirement but I’d rather we ditch the term altogether and focus more on new beginnings and opportunities to, in my case, tap in to more creative side and find out what’s most rewarding to me, I’m going to learn golf, travel more, identify the policy issues I remain most passionate about and assess how I might engage. That means shrinking the policy issues that take up space in my head from dozens to a handful—not an easy task! Life is a journey and am excited to take a break and find myself again and as I like to say find my zen. The first 5 pages of information all related to important financial considerations such as the amount of money needed, investments, financial advisors, annuities, and so forth. The 6th page brought forth what he was looking for, that is, how to find meaning in your life after retirement. Two articles by Kathleen Coxwell, written in 2021 discussed how a retiree might find meaning in life following retirement. #kathleencoxwell #meaninginlife #retirementactivities #newlyretired #retirement Victor Frankl's insightful book, Man's Search for Meaning, was quoted and recommended reading for the newly retired. Coxwell suggested a variety of approaches to finding meaning in life after daily work has ceased: including practicing mindfulness meditation, exercise, volunteer activities, part-time employment, learning a new language, adult study courses, developing a hobby, and other excellent and rewarding activities. She also suggests consulting a retirement coach with whom one can explore a wide array of possible postretirement pursuits.
