Matthew Walker and Rob Packard will be explaining how to fill in Medical Device Academy's template for a Summative Usability Testing Report. The template is based on the outline for a report specified in the FDA human factors guidance. Matthew and Rob will also share tips, tricks, and traps of collecting data and preparing the report. For example, where should you save your data collection forms for each subject? What format should those collection forms be in? How long does it take to write your report? What information is most likely to be missing when you sit down to write? The irony of this is that based on what Ive seen and the trajectory of development, I think that AI is going to kill the research democratization ‘debate’ All those simple research projects that we used to train designers and PMs to do will just be run as AI agents set up, customized, and managed by sr researchers.
Just watched a demo of an AI conducting a usability test interview with someone. Had low expectations for it. Worked much better than i thought it would.

Friction often reduces usability, however, a controlled friction, which slows the user down can in fact improve usability and productivity. Think about the gmail’s prompt to check if the attachment is missing when we have please find attached or a similar phrase in the email body. It is an intentional friction, it slows us down but increases our productivity. As we continue to embrace AI and think about helping users accomplish whatever they need to do faster and more efficient, it would be good to think if by making them go a bit slower can we help them be more productive? Would that reduce the risk? Back in my consulting days, I wrote a blog post about the Pause button that we should press to think about higher level questions instead of figuring out how it should be done. Forcing users to pause, by adding well thought through friction in the user journey, is still relevant. What examples can you think of where adding friction helps you become more productive, predictable, and safe?

I know there is a lot of fear around this but if this works as promised (a big if) that should free up research resources for more complex and high value projects. Research budgets and headcount, no matter how big, were always smaller than the demand. To delegate the easy but valuable and necessary projects creates opportunities to have greater impact.
