The development of medical devices has traditionally required the highest levels of clinical and technological expertise. The skills involved have been strongly focused on advanced clinical, technological, and administrative competencies to meet stringent compliance requirements. 🩺 Once the device is completed, the post-market phase primarily revolves around managing the product as well as controlled and well-justified product development. However, the world has changed, and a new core competence—design expertise—is becoming integral to medical device development. Addressing user needs increasingly demands investments in design. Service design provides an excellent set of tools for various stages of the product lifecycle, from identifying initial needs and validation to refining plans and collecting ideas for further development—just to name a few applicable areas. Digital medical devices, or medical software, have emerged from the realm of software development expertise. In software development, strong and agile design skills combined with customer-centricity have become significant differentiators. As a result, service design seems more at home than ever in product development projects in this context. Today, the book Transformation Towards Human-Centered Medical Devices by Ida Koho was published. It is the first handbook on service design targeted at product owners of medical devices. I am deeply grateful to Ida Koho for the opportunity to contribute to this book, albeit in a small way, by providing perspectives on the use of service design in the context of medical software. Digitalization is a strength of medical software, enabling more agile adaptation and new versions. In software use cases, these changes can reach the market more quickly, provided design expertise is tightly integrated into both development and product management. A product manager doesn’t need to stretch into new roles but can instead leverage professional design expertise to free up time for critical, quality-enhancing processes from a product management perspective. Thank you, Ida, for the opportunity, and congratulations on the publication of your book! 💥 💯 Towards Human-Centered Medical Devices - In the coming days, the book will also be available in a wide range of bookstores, including Amazon, Adlibris, Akateeminen, Google Play, Suomalainen Kirjakauppa, and more. 📖 📚
