I am happy to share our recent work on a hybrid robotic platform for minimally invasive procedures! 🎯 Our novel platform combines tendon-driven actuation for precise positioning and motion compensation with magnetic catheter actuation, enabling damage-free cannulation of the pancreatic duct — a key challenge in medical robotics. In this paper, we also evaluate different magnetic profiles for cannulation, introducing the potential to use one or two external permanent magnets, depending on the clinical scenario. This flexibility can greatly enhance patient-specific treatment. This work was made possible through a fantastic collaboration with Prof. Seok Chang Ryu from Ewha Womans University, Seoul, South Korea. Big kudos to first author Benjamin Calmé who did a massive job, well done! One exciting application of reinforcement learning (RL) in robotics is the modulation of assistance in rehabilitation robots based on a subject's motor abilities. This leads to the development of personalized controllers that adapt to a wide range of motor impairments in patients. While it's crucial to approach safety-critical systems carefully, where data-driven control without stability guarantees might not always be justified, RL can play a complementary role. By tuning the parameters of well-established controllers, RL serves as a high-level optimization layer, enabling automatic parameter adjustments. Though the exact requirements for controller parameters are often unclear, the ultimate success metric is usually well-defined, making reward-based methods practical.
